Fayette NAACP meets Sat.

Childs named top YMCA volunteer

The Fayette Family YMCA has named Dr. Ernie Childs its 2002 Volunteer of the Year. This annual award is given to a member from each metro Atlanta YMCA branch who, through outstanding work and dedication, helps the YMCA build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.

Bearden, associate professor of Dental Hygiene at Clayton College & State University, has published an article, "A Statistical Analysis of Dental Hygiene Students' Grades in Online and On-campus courses and Performance on the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam," in the summer 2002 edition of the Journal of Dental Hygiene.

CCSU celebrates first Fulbright Scholar in Residence

Dr. Raymond Osei, from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in Ghana, Africa, is Clayton State's first Fulbright Scholar in Residence. Osei teaches World Philosophy and African History in hopes that he can "bring (his) own horizon to bear on development of these courses in institutions in the United States."

Georgia Southern hosts Open House

Georgia Southern University will host an Open House for prospective students and their parents Saturday, Nov. 9, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The activities will be centered at the Russell Union on the University campus in Statesboro.

Lady Tigers are state champs

It has been 38 years since Fayette County High School brought a state championship trophy home to their hallways. In 1964 the school's varsity baseball team won the state title. Now the 2002 Lady Tigers varsity softball team are state champs.

Teams winding down season with wins

Several teams were off last week, while other teams had big region battles to play. The results were fairly successful for a few of the local teams, including Landmark Christian and Sandy Creek.

New store brings the gym home

There is a new store in Fayetteville for people out there who enjoy exercising and staying fit but have difficulties finding the time to go to a gym. Home Bodies, located by the Barnes and Noble and Kinko's in Fayetteville, is a one stop shop for those who would like to put exercise equipment or a home gym into their house.

SCAT wins Halloween Invitational

SCAT swimmers won their second meet in a row with a first-place finish at the Halloween Invitational in LaGrange on Oct. 26. The previous weekend SCAT won the Georgia Southwestern Invitational in Americus.

McIntosh kicks of basketball season on Thursday night

McIntosh High School wil officially kick off the 2002-2003 basketbal season this Thursday with "McIntosh Madness."

PTC Paddlers host annual meeting on Sunday

The Peachtree City Paddlers canoe and kayak club's annual meeting will be held Sunday, Nov. 10, at Augustino's Ristorante Italiano, 282 North Hwy. 74 in Peachtree City. Aida' returns to Atlanta as a success

In 1998, Atlanta got the first taste of the show that woul become the smash Broadway musical from Disney, "Aida." It was called "Elaborate Lives: the Legend of Aida" and was written by Elton John and Tim Rice, who teamed up to write the music for Disney's other huge Broadway hit, "The Lion King." Now, "Aida" returns to the city that nurtured it at the beginning for a three week run at the Fox Theatre.

Author of southern ghost stories to sign her book at area bookstores this weekend

Though Halloween was last week, ghost stories can be enjoyed year round. For fans of spooky tales, author Sherry Austin will be in the area this weekend signing her book "Mariahof the Spirits and Other Southern Ghost Stories."
