Security to be upgraded at Fayette water treatment plants

The Fayette County Water System plans to beef up security at its water treatment plants.

The new security system will provide card access control to all buildings at the plants and motion detectors on all windows. An intercom system will also be installed.

The water committee voted to recommend to the Fayette County Commission that the low bidder, Ultimate Security, be awarded the contract for the work. Ultimate bid $310,000 for the project and has done other work for the county, it was noted.

Chairman Chuck Watkins abstained from the vote, saying his daughter babysits for the owner of the company.

The water committee also voted to recommend awarding a bid to repaint the exteriors of two water tanks in Peachtree City. The low bidder was Tank Pro at $146,845. The price covers repainting the tanks only, not the support columns of both tanks.

One of the tanks is located off Crabapple Lane; the other is adjacent to The Avenue in Peachtree City retail center.

The committee is also recommending to the county commission that a bid to install miscellaneous water meters be awarded to Shockley Plumbing for $71,400. This is the final phase of a program to install special water meters that transmit readings via radio signals so employees don't have to stop at each meter to take a reading.

The meter installations for the final phase need more plumbing work than the previous phases, said Water System Director Tony Parrott.
