Project Love up and running again this year

Thanksgiving is fast approaching. With the holidays comes a heightened need for help in many areas and many please will be made for volunteers, monetary assistance and items.

One group in Fayette County, Fayette Senior Services' Meals-on-Wheels program, delivers meals to homebound seniors five days a week throughout the entire year. However, during the weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years the nonprofit agency is not required to provide meals, so normal funds are not allocated. Every year the staff reaches out to the community to ask for assistance in raising the money needed to provide special Holiday meal packs to those on their regular routes.

"Project Love" provides two-day and five-day frozen meal packs which are delivered prior to the holidays. For many, the holiday meal packs are the highlight of their day.

Two-day packs for Thanksgiving are $10 and five-day packs for Christmas are $25.

Volunteers from civic groups, businesses, churches and other community members sign up for a route one day a week and typically deliver to eight or nine individuals. Currently, there is a waiting list for the program and more volunteers are needed.

Volunteers can deliver meals on a regular weekly basis or may choose to be placed on a "substitute" list. Substitutes are needed when a volunteer is ill, on vacation or otherwise unable to handle their normal route.

To make the Christmas and New Year meals even more special, Fayette Senior Services also puts together "goody bags" which include items such as lotion, powder, small flashlights, socks, hankies, stamps, non-skid slippers, night lights, tissues, gloves, nail clippers, batteries, note cards and combs. Items should be unwrapped to allow volunteers to match the item with the need of the senior.

Those interested in donating to Project Love can mail a donation to Project Love, Fayette Senior Services Inc., 390 Lee Street, Fayetteville, GA 30214-2056 or drop off a donation between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Item donations may be brought to the Friendship Center at Fayette Senior Services Dec. 9-13 during the same hours.
