Seven Brides For Seven BrothersAn evening of comedy and romance Theater of the Stars will launch their 2007 season next week when “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” takes stage at the Fox Theater in Atlanta June 26 through July 1. The musical, based on “The Sobbin’ Women” by Stephen Vincent Benet and the 1954 film directed by Stanley Donen, is a brand new production which showcases the movie’s score as well as several new songs. The production features daredevil dancing, modeled after Michael Kidd’s famed film choreography. So when her dad, Carson (Tate Donovan) moves her from River Heights to Los Angeles, Nancy quickly finds a mystery involving the death of a famous actress. Okay, the reason why they are moving to L.A. is because Carson has to do a temporary job as an attorney. Nancy promises her dad not to sleuth, but she goes against his wishes and tries to solve the mystery. ‘Fantastic Four: Rise of Silver Surfer’: Good enoughThe first “Fantastic Four” film was a bright and shiny counterpoint to some of the darker superhero movies of the past. It was colorful, it was funny and it didn’t take itself too seriously. Sure there were lessons about being true to yourself and your friends, but overall it was four funky heroes taking down a metallic baddie. Spend this Saturday ‘Down Town’Weekend celebration will honor famed local author The Fayette County Public Library will honor the beloved Fayetteville medical doctor and nationally known best-selling author Dr. Ferrol Sams on Saturday, June 16 with an old-fashion country picnic in celebration of the release of his newest book, “Down Town.” The event will take place on the library’s lawn and in the social hall, from 1-4 p.m. and will include hot dogs, chicken, and much more, plus live entertainment by Jhelisa Anderson. Weekend concerts to aid military veteransThis weekend in Fayetteville U.S. Vet Aid will honor military veterans with a festival at the Villages Amphitheater that includes musical performances by classic rock groups and the up-and-coming band Sun Domingo. Family film ‘Gracie’ proves that girls can play tooIt’s another inspirational, “this is how to change the world” film, and it’s getting mixed reviews. On one hand, “Gracie” is a nice change of pace in the midst of the summer blockbuster extravaganza taking place (i.e. “Spiderman 3,” “Pirates 3” and “Shrek the Third”). Summer vacation also marks a time of intellectual expansion for many kids of all ages as local libraries kick off their annual vacation reading programs. ‘Knocked Up’: Oh baby, what a movieThe premise of this comedy from the people behind “The 40 Year Old Virgin” is a simple one: what if a woman got pregnant after a one night stand? “Knocked Up” succeeds because it examines this from all points of view - the underachieving, immature guy, the overachieving, successful woman, his even lazier friends and her disapproving family members - and does so with an incredibly high laugh quotient. This might sound like hyperbole after my glowing review of “The 40 Year Old Virgin,” but “Knocked Up” is better. It is a tighter movie with more consistent laughs. |
