‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’: A swashbuckling good time!

When we last left the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, witty pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) had been swallowed by the sea and taken to Davy Jones’ locker as repayment for his debt to The Flying Dutchman’s captain. Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and a recently revived Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) along with crew members from The Black Pearl had made a deal to work together to rescue Jack from the locker.

‘Shrek the Third’: Third time’s charming

First he downsized Lord Farquaad. Then he destroyed a fairy godmother’s hopes and dreams to rule Far Far Away. Now Shrek (Mike Myers) is back with Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) for another big adventure.

‘Shrek the Third’: Bit of a bummer

I had high hopes for this movie, but it didn’t live up to my expectations.

I have seen the previous two films in the “Shrek” series numerous times and I thought both of them were funny. They also maintained their humor on repeated viewings, sometimes even getting better. “Shrek the Third” may not get any better and that is scary.

“Hot Fuzz” - Locked and loaded with laughs and action

The action movie is a summer movie staple. It often features shootouts, explosions, car chases and, usually, a monstrous amount of stock characters and plot points. How many times have you seen a renegade cop team up with an unlikely character, fight the odds and save the day? Plenty, I’m sure. Well, prepare to see these things again, only done with tongue planted firmly in cheek while offering up a sincere homage as well.

Mary Wilson of the Supremes to perform at The Fred

Mary Wilson of the Supremes

Mary Wilson of the Supremes will continue the lineup of performers for the annual summer concert series when she performs at The Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater this weekend, May 11 and 12.

While growing up in Detroit’s Brewster Projects, Wilson had long fantasized about being a performer. Her love for singing blossomed when, at the age of 13, she befriended Florence Ballard, Betty McGlown and Diana Ross. Fueled by their mutual obsession with music and their driving ambition for stardom, the quartet formed a singing group, the Primettes. When McGlown left the group, the girls recruited Barbara Martin. Together they auditioned for Motown and were later signed to the fledging label. Martin eventually dropped out as well and, now a trio, Mary, Flo and Diane became the Supremes.

Swing by to see ‘Spider-Man 3’

Now Peter is back with three villains, Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), Venom (Topher Grace), and his best friend turned enemy, the New Goblin (James Franco), who wants to avenge his father’s death.

‘Spider-Man 3’: A worthy installment

The Spider-Man movies are great. They are arguably the best superhero movies of all time. That being said, “Spider-Man 3” is the worst of the three. It’s not bad, it’s actually pretty good, but the other two surpass it with a more streamlined story and some better interplay with the characters.
