The Coweta chapter of Piedmont Region Georgia Clients Council (GCC) will meet on Thursday, June 7 in the Board Room of the Rutledge Center at 61 Hospital Road in Newnan. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. The Westside Community Forum meeting is at 7 p.m. Currently the two organizations are working on similar or shared projects and having the two meetings coincide with all members of each invited to attend the other.

The Coweta Clients Council (GCC) chapter recruits and trains volunteers to aid in the assessment of citizens’ needs that have to do with housing, health care, public benefits, work and school issues. It is the goal of GCC to provide training that will empower citizens to know how to access community services and enable them to become productive community participants.

Georgia Clients Council is a partner of the Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) which provides aid to qualified persons in need of legal assistance. The program provides free civil legal assistance to persons with low income through the services of lawyers, paralegals and trained staff who know how to assist in resolving non criminal legal problems.

Examples of services are the Circuit Rider program that is available by appointment when an attorney visits clients at the Department of Family and Children Services. The Circuit Rider service is available one day each month by appointment and by calling 404-894-7707.

The Kinship Care Program provides various options for grandparent/relative caregivers who need assistance with financial and medical needs. Adoption assistance is available to some Kinship Care families who are adopting minor relatives.

Persons needing services should call 1-800-822-5391 and 770-304-9684 so that local volunteers may work in the background to provide assistance.

With a mission statement of empowering low income citizens through education and training to create positive changes in their lives and in their communities, volunteers will train to provide much needed GCC services. More volunteers are needed and interested persons are asked to contact Mary Roberts at 770-253-0651 or Sarah Thomas at 770-304-9684. The Coweta Chapter is now accepting clients who will need services. Sarah Thomas, a retired social worker, is training volunteers in the process of interviewing clients.
