Stop by to see the ‘Doctor’ this weekendThe Newnan Theatre Company enters the second weekend of their production, “Playing Doctor,” this Friday night at the Coweta theater. Best selling author to headline PTC literary festNew York Times bestselling author Sharyn McCrumb is slated to headline the first-ever Peachtree City Literary Festival to be held July 27-29. ‘Hairspray’: Fun for a little whileJohn Waters’ film “Hairspray” was turned into a Broadway musical and now that musical has been turned into a Hollywood movie. It is the circle of show business. Unfortunately, if you are a fan of Waters’ twisted work, it has been sanitized a bit as it has taken on its musical form. That isn’t to say that the current incarnation of “Hairspray” doesn’t have its moments, it does, but it ditches the weird Waters vibe about halfway through the film and then quickly loses steam. ‘Hairspray’: Spray some comedy on yourself!According to Mr. Matt, my mom’s hairdresser, this is a movie that will ‘stick with you.’ I agree! My sister, mom, and grandmother dragged me to this because they thought it was going to be good, I didn’t. Now I see I was wrong! It was hilarious and it had great actors whose names I actually knew and fun music and dancing. ‘I Now Pronounce You’ the worst summer movieWhat do Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Jessica Biel, Dan Aykroyd, Ving Rhames, Steve Buscemi, Rachel Dratch, Lance Bass, Dave Matthews and David Spade have in common? An appearance in one of the worst movies of the year, “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.” ‘Charlotte’s Web’ on the big screen in FayettevilleThe next in the series of free family films is coming to the Villages Amphitheater this Friday with the family favorite, “Charlotte’s Web.” Emily Baldwin: Additional, extended "Les Miserables" videos
I've had requests for additional footage from Twilight Theatre's production on "Les Miserables" so I complied.
I have to mention that I failed to include very much footage or credit to the lead of the show- call it oversight or pre-vacation brain freeze- but I want to make sure I say what a great job Trevor Martin did as Jean Valjean. Southside Theatre Guild goes ‘Crazy for You’If you are a fan of the music of George Gershwin, Southside Theatre Guild’s production of the musical “Crazy for You” is right up your alley. Based on the George and Ira Gershwin musical “Girl Crazy,” “Crazy for You” combines classic Gershwin numbers such as “I Got Rhythm,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Embraceable You,” and “I Can’t Be Bothered Now” with dazzling choreography and a raucous, farcical comedy. B.B. King to perform at The FredPrepare your ears for what will surely be one of the best musical performances at The Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater this year when B.B. King takes stage on Friday and Saturday, July 20 and 21. Riley B. King, better known as B. B. King or "The King of Blues," was born September 16, 1925 in Itta Bena, Mississippi. King began recording in 1949 and signed with West Coast record man Jules Bihari a year later. In the 1950s, King became one of the most important names in R&B music, collecting an impressive list of hits that included songs like “You Know I love You,” “Woke Up This Morning,” “Please Love Me,” “When My Heart Beats Like a Hammer,” “Whole Lotta Love,” “and “Everyday I Have the Blues.” Imitating Rich LittleRich Little, the undisputed master of mimicry, will take stage this Saturday, July 21 at the Fayetteville Villages Amphitheater. Little, who has gained international recognition as one of the most gifted and popular performers in the entertainment business, is the next performer in the Sun City Peachtree Del Webb 2007 Summer Concert Series. ‘Harry Potter 5’: Go for the magic, stay for the actingThe latest Harry Potter movie, “Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix” is the most satisfying sequel out there this summer. Not only does it live up to the other installments in the series, but it stands out on its own thanks to a terrific acting pedigree. Among the series regulars are Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman and Michael Gambon, but “Phoenix” includes second visits from Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort and David Thewlis as Lupin, as well as introductions to Bellatrix Lestrange, played by Helena Bonham Carter, and, with perhaps the best performance in the series yet, Dolores Umbridge, played by Imelda Staunton. Daniel Radcliffe (Harry) is also growing as an actor and he is leaving his young compatriots far behind. Newnan Theatre Co. premiers ‘Playing Doctor’ this weekendThe Newnan Theatre Company will open the next show in their Artist Series this weekend when they present the hilarious comedy “Playing Doctor.” PTC New Neighbors League sets Amnesty DayPeachtree City New Neighbors League Club (NNLC) will sponsor its annual Amnesty Day on Thursday, Aug. 2 at the Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, 101 N. Peachtree Parkway. High school students receive awards from Newnan KiwanisOn April 10, the Newnan Kiwanis presented local high school students with “A” awards to honor them for their academic achievement through the school year. The event was held at the Coweta County Fairgrounds, and lunch was provided by Chick-fil-A. Southside members attend Colonial Dames meetingMembers of the Thomas Johnson Chapter, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century met at Ansley Golf Club recently for installation of officers 2007-2009. The Thomas Johnson Chapter members are from the metro Atlanta area. From left: Virginia Lingelbach, president; Susan Lemesis, honorary state president; Judy Hughes and Janice Cook of Peachtree City, and registrar Judy Farrigan. Idols rule the Villages this weekendThe Villages Amphitheater will be hoppin’ this Friday and Saturday night as it plays host to two big summer events. On Friday night, the fourth annual Fayette Idol will pit 50 contestants against each other in two age categories until only two stand as this year’s Fayette Idols. Harry Potter, Order of the Phoenix“My Prophecy Is That You Will Like This Film” *** 1/2 Okay, this is the first Harry Potter movie where Harry doesn’t get to play his favorite game, Quidditch. Besides a few eerie scenes, it was pretty good. I just finished reading the book, and I am wondering if I should have read it at all because they did not include a lot of the information in the movie. However, if you don’t read the book, you won’t get a lot of the movie. “Transformers” - A great big, live action cartoonMichael Bay movies are known for being long and overblown, filled with too many characters with not enough substance and too many chases and explosions. That formula made films like “The Island” and “Bad Boys II” sink, despite featuring a number of good things that worked. Bay’s new film, “Transformers,” soars, despite featuring tons of CGI metal and hundreds of explosions. It is almost like Bay was made to make this movie, his first truly great summer movie. FCFT to hold auditions for Disney productionFayette-Coweta Family Theatre, Inc. will hold open auditions for their upcoming musical "Disney's Sleeping Beauty, Kids" on Saturday, July 7 for performers ages 6 to 15 years. Auditions will cast more than 30 performers including seven principle roles and six featured roles. Tabor, McCrumb to headline PTC Literary FestivalDr. James Tabor will be returning to Peachtree City for the first ever Peachtree City Literary Festival, to be held July 27-29. Emily Baldwin: "Les Miserables" at the Fred
I went to see the Twilight Theatre Company's production of "Les Miserables: the School Edition" this past Friday night at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater in Peachtree City, and I have to say I was very impressed with the caliber show that they put on.
Broadway comes to The Fred“Les Miserables,” the world’s longest running musical, is coming to the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater this weekend. Presented by a company of 60 talented students, The Twilight Theatre will perform the student edition of “Les Miserables” July 6, 7, 13 and 14. A worldwide favorite, “Les Miserables” has been translated into 21 different languages. ‘License to Wed’: A series of unfortunate eventsIndependence Day. It’s a time to reflect on our country’s history, celebrate our freedom, and dream of what the future may hold. It’s marked by parades, food, friends and family and capped off with fireworks. Every summer the holiday also marks one of the biggest release dates for Hollywood each year. At least one major blockbuster is released each Fourth of July, and this year that film was “Transformers,” which has already pulled in a whopping $27.4 million since it opened Monday night. ‘Sicko’: A triumphant rallying cryIt is almost certain that you have an opinion of filmmaker Michael Moore and that opinion has likely been colored by your political leanings. Films like “Bowling for Columbine” and “Fahrenheit 9/11” were movies that struck a chord with liberal audiences, but Moore has made his most universal, and best, film to date. No matter how you vote, “Sicko,” will move you, hopefully into a waking position. ‘Ratatouille’: Not Pixar’s best effortFirst of all, this is not Pixar’s best effort. Along with a confusing plot, there is one unnecessary use of the ‘H’ word in this film. But the film was great on a comic scale. Remy is a rat, yes a rat, who unlike the rest of his clan, hates garbage and likes human food. He finds and steals a book called “Anyone Can Cook.” From then on, he starts seeing the ghost of Gusteau, the owner of a once five star restaurant and author of the book. PTC’s July 4It’s the event local residents, and people from all over the nation, anticipate each summer: Independence Day. Parades, food, fun and fireworks will mark the annual celebration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and as always Peachtree City plans to celebrate in a big way. ‘Ratatouille’: An enigma of a filmPixar has never given viewers a bad movie and “Ratatouille” continues their streak of providing incredible animation with solid storytelling. It remains to be seen whether this film will be a hit though and I really wonder if it will connect with kids the same way that “Toy Story,” “Finding Nemo” and “Cars” did. ‘Fantastic Four’: Surf’s up, dudeThe Fantastic Four: Rubbery Reed Richards, Invisible Sue Storm, Hot Torch-like Johnny Storm, and Hulky Ben Grimm, are back and ready for action. Along with the pressure of being viewed as superheroes by New York City, Reed and Sue are getting married. Problems start when an alien-like creature known only as the Silver Surfer begins to cause difficulties for the Earth. When Johnny chases the shiny silver surfer, he is grabbed by the neck and sent plummeting back to Earth. Reed later finds out that the encounter with the surfer enables Johnny to switch powers with the other three superheroes by touching them. Johnny is not thrilled to become a rocky hulk. Lee Greenwood to perform at the Villages AmphitheaterThe Sun City Peachtree Del Webb 2007 Summer Concert Series will continue this weekend with internationally acclaimed artist Lee Greenwood at the Fayetteville Villages Amphitheater on Saturday, June 30. Greenwood is virtually synonymous with musical patriotism; his song “God Bless the USA” was voted online by Americans as the most recognizable patriotic song in the nation. |
