If you are a fan of the music of George Gershwin, Southside Theatre Guild’s production of the musical “Crazy for You” is right up your alley.

Based on the George and Ira Gershwin musical “Girl Crazy,” “Crazy for You” combines classic Gershwin numbers such as “I Got Rhythm,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Embraceable You,” and “I Can’t Be Bothered Now” with dazzling choreography and a raucous, farcical comedy.

The plot focuses on an aspiring dancer named Bobby Childs, who is forced by his mother, a banking magnate, to close down a former theater in Deadrock, Nevada. Once there, Childs falls in love with Polly Baker, the daughter of the theater owner. He concocts a plan to save the theater by posing as famous theater producer Bela Zangler and putting on a show. Soon, Polly has fallen in love with Bobby posing as Zangler and when the real Zangler comes to town, the fireworks really begin.

“Crazy for You” is directed by Jared Wright, who was last at the helm of a show at Southside Theatre Guild for last year’s production of “Godspell.” Wright has received help with the dancing side of the show from Sabine Scholz and Lindsay Radcliffe, while Barbara Zellner served as the show’s musical director and Becky Clark led the band.

Wright offered nothing but praise for his cast, which presents a good mix of young and old, as well as veterans of shows at Southside and some exciting new talent. Nick Fehn is a triple threat as Bobby, singing, dancing and mugging his way through a very demanding performance, while Kara Large grounds the show with her sturdy performance as Polly. Bringing New York pizzazz to the town of Deadrock are Bridget Knapik as Bobby’s fiancee Irene and Ryan Blasingame as the real Bela Zangler.

“Crazy for You” opened on Thursday, July 19 and will run at 8 p.m., Thursdays-Saturdays through Aug. 4 with a special 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, July 29. Tickets are $12 for all Thursday performances and $12 for students and $15 for adults at all other performances. Phone 770-969-0956 or visit www.stgplays.com to make your reservations today.
