Habitat sale is Friday

The Newnan-Coweta Habitat for Humanity ReStore started in Senoia with a yard sale under a tent and in a garage for one Saturday a month. After realizing the needs of the people and with the strong support from the community, the ReStore was able to re-locate to its current location on Ga. Highway 16 East in May of 2005.

Lesley Goodwin named as new principal

The Coweta County Board of Education has named Lesley Goodwin as the new principal of Poplar Road Elementary School for the upcoming year. Goodwin, currently the assistant principal of Thomas Crossroads Elementary School, will succeed Rebecca Gibson, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

Summer school registration

Registration for Coweta County’s 2008 high school summer school is today, June 2 and 3, at the Central Educational Center (CEC) in Newnan.

Highway grass cutting begins

The grass growing season is upon us and Coweta County has begun its yearly time of cutting rights of way to maintain the safety of our roadways. The Coweta County Road Department maintains a regular route that is followed, insuring that all county roads are cut on a regular basis, said county Public Information Officer Patricia Palmer. Four cutting crews, running three bush hogs each, cover the route. The crews cut rights of way on county roads from May through the end of October or early November.

Hwy. 54 down to 1 lane overnight starting Tues.

A resurfacing and widening project on Ga. Highway 54 in Coweta County will cut traffic down to one lane during the overnight hours starting Tuesday.

Senoia to ponder 4-year terms

Senoia officials are once again eyeing a possible change in the length of terms served by City Council members.

This time, however, it’s being motivated by a conflict in the city’s charter with a new state law, explains City Administrator Richard Ferry.

Coweta county 4-H’ers take state horse judging honors

The Coweta County Senior horse judging team won 2nd place honors at the State 4-H Horse Judging Contest in Athens, GA on May 3, 2008. Emilee Brinton, Erin Davis and Megan Smith faced nine other teams and will represent Coweta County and Georgia 4-H in Colorado in January 2009 for their success.

City of Newnan annual mosquito programs begins June 1st

The city of Newnan Public Works Department is gearing up for its annual mosquito program. This year the program will begin June 1st. Every year the city of Newnan sprays city neighborhoods with a synthetic pyrethroid product. This product is a synthetic version of a natural insecticide produced by chrysanthemum flowers. This spray helps control adult mosquito populations within the City.

Piedmont Newnan Hospital gets OK

The rezoning for what should be a physical landmark in Coweta and southwest metro Atlanta received approval May 13 as county commissioners signed off on what will become the eight-story Piedmont Newnan Hospital. Originally zoned RC Rural Conservation, the property is now designated O-I Office Institutional.

Senoia still looking for Memorial Day volunteers

The city of Senoia is looking for a few good volunteers. Senoia stages the area’s largest Memorial day celebration, and during Tuesday’s meeting of the Downtown Development Authority, chairman Suzanne Helfman asked the authority members to see if they knew of anybody who would like to volunteer for the event. The city is also looking for some donated golf carts for the day to help shuttle the veterans to and from the parade area.

Industrial space, warehouses could be headed next to movie studio

Coweta County Commission is set to hold two public hearing June 12 on proposed developments on Chestlehurst Road off Ga. Highway 16 just east of Senoia. One of the proposals seeks to rezone 8.459 acres from Rural Conservation (RC) to Light Industrial (LM) for offices, warehouses and shop space while the other seeks to rezone two tracts totaling approximately six acres to establish a church and Christian retreat facility.

Illegal alien charged with rape

A 27 year-old Palmetto man was arrested April 27, charged with the statutory rape of a 13 year-old girl at her home on the city’s south side. Police said the man had been living illegally in the United States for 16 years.

Relay for Life Coweta celebrated its 15th year on May 2 and 3 at the Coweta Fairgrounds in Newnan. With 364 cancer survivors registered to join 69 teams of volunteers who would walk for twelve hours to support the American Cancer Society’s efforts to raise funds for research and patient services, the scene was picture perfect as the sun set over the Opening Ceremonies.

If you are a subscriber to cable television through Newnan Utilities, you may have stumbled across a local cooking show on Channel 10 over the past two years. “Dishing With Mike,” hosted by Mike Hutcheson, a former executive chef in some very posh places, prides itself on showing local viewers “how to do fun food, fast.”

Huge development planned near Coweta

It was a while in the making, but a massive residential and commercial/office proposal is finally surfacing in Palmetto. The Foxhall Village proposal is billed as a 1,323-acre master-planned sustainable community located inside the Fulton County portion of Palmetto, according to a development of Regional Importance (DRI) application filed with Atlanta Regional Commission. The development application was filed by Merrill Trust Communities & Resorts, LLC. The proposed development is situated in the northwest portion of the city.

Westmoreland draws a challenger in Congressional race

Rep. Lynn Westmoreland has drawn a Democratic challenger in his bid for re-election to the Third Congressional District. Newnan attorney Stephen Camp qualified this week for the position. As of noon, Thursday no Republican opposition had qualified for Westmoreland’s post. If Camp and Westmoreland remain the lone qualifiers, the will face off in the November 4 general election.

Parking summit set for May 14 in Senoia

Senoia’s new reputation as a destination is giving some business owners a headache.

At the April 21 meeting, Albert Groce, who owns a video shop on Main Street, pleaded with the City Council to do something about the parking problem.

Seabaugh named to task force

State Senator Mitch Seabaugh (R-Sharpsburg) has been appointed by Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle to chair the Senate Task Force on Value Government. The task force will look to determine how state government can provide services in a more effective and efficient manner to Georgia citizens. Ultimately, the panel will find ways to give taxpayers the best value possible in state government.

Piedmont Newnan gets new critical care services director

Piedmont Newnan Hospital has named Betsy Jackson as director of critical care services. As director of critical care services, Jackson will be responsible for the 12 bed intensive care unit as well as the 21 bed progressive care unit.

Committee starts looking at restructuring government

Does Coweta County’s governmental structure need to undergo a change in the future? An attempt to begin to find an answer to that question came April 17 with the first meeting of a committee proposed in February by County Commission Chairman Tim Higgins to determine whether the county’s current governmental structure is sufficient to meet future needs. Much of the April 17 conversation included the idea of having a countywide commission chairman.
