Coweta’s growth continues

If you thought that Coweta’s growth is continuing, last week’s Census Bureau report confirmed that suspicion.

Coweta’s population was 118,936 as of July 1, 2007, and the county had 29,881 residents classified as minority, 25.3 percent of the population. Coweta’s white population increased from 81,012 in 2003 to 95,261 in 2007 for a growth rate of 17.5 percent.

Pathway proposes Twelve Parks retail component

The economy may be in a downturn across the country, but that does not mean future plans cannot be put in place. That was the case Aug. 5 when Peachtree City-based Pathway Communities got the okay from Coweta County Commission to hold a public hearing Sept. 11 on a proposed rezoning for a 23.7-acre retail component of the Twelve Parks development in southeast Coweta.

Senoia wants to switch to four year terms

The city of Senoia will stage a public hearing September 15 to consider switching the Mayor and City Council’s terms from two years to four years. The move comes in part due to the problems of conducting municipal elections during even years.

Fundraiser run set for October

It is going to be a different kind of 5K race, Halloween costumes and all. The Coweta County Commission Aug. 5 approved the Oct. 25 Halloween Classic 5K fundraiser to benefit CORRAL (Coweta Organization for Riding, Rehabilitation and Learning) in Roscoe and to help start up the Newnan Running Club. The event is a follow-up to last year’s Goblin Run.

The full-service branch is located in the Summit 1825 building on Highway 34 East. Residents of Coweta County are eligible to join Delta Community.

State park plan gets final OK

Nature just got a lot more interesting, especially for anyone interested in spending a leisurely amount of time along the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The approval and bond sale of the 3,000-acre Chattahoochee Bend State Park in western Coweta County on property bordering Carroll and Heard counties was announced July 28 at the Coweta County Commission chambers at a meeting of Chattahoochee-Flint Regional Development Center.

Suspects still on the loose in Coweta bank robbery

An investigation into the robbery of Southern Community Bank in Newnan by two men late Tuesday morning is ongoing. Coweta Sheriff’s investigators said no weapons were used and no one was injured. Some aspects of the robbery show a familiarity to a July 21 attempted robbery in east Coweta and a July 23 robbery in Griffin.

New school year begins in Coweta August 6

Coweta County students go back to school for the 2008-09 school year on Wednesday, August 6. Parents and students can visit schools on the day before school starts, Tuesday August 5, from 10 a.m. to noon (all middle schools) and noon to 2 p.m. (all elementary schools).

10 Coweta schools fail to make AYP progress

The Georgia Department of Education released an initial list of Coweta County schools which successfully met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) requirements under the No Child Left Behind act in the 2007-08 school year.

Coweta officials still looking for bank robbery suspect

Coweta Sheriff’s Office is still looking a man that attempted a robbery at a bank in the Thomas Crossroads area early Monday afternoon. Maj. James Yarbrough is asking that anyone with information contact the Sheriff’s office.

Coweta County to lower millage rate

Coweta County commission is scheduled to set the 2008 millage rate Friday at 1:30 p.m. following a public hearing on the matter. The proposed millage rates for incorporated and unincorporated areas are going down and would include no net tax increase.

New police station site could be unveiled in August

The city of Senoia is getting ready to decide on the future site of its new police station.

During Monday’s City Council meeting, city administrator Richard Ferry was explaining the city’s short term work program. The city has held several executive sessions concerning real estate, and Ferry said the city may be ready to close on the parcel in August. The city has spent $4,000 on the plan for the station, and is estimating the land will cost $215,000. The station would be built in 2009 and 2010 and run the city $1.3 million in construction costs. The station will be funded through a combination of impact fees, Special Purpose Local Option Sales tax funds and general obligation debt.

School board names 2 schools after long-time Coweta educators

The Coweta County voted to name two Coweta County elementary schools after long-time county teachers and administrators, at its July 8 regular meeting.

Coweta County approves variances

Coweta County commissioners July 15 approved three proposals for variances and conditional use permits that had been heard by the Board of Zoning Appeals. Commissioners also approved an agreement relating to medical care received by inmates at the county prison.

Nearly 14 percent of Coweta County voters turned out Tuesday for the Democratic and Republican primaries. With 29 of 30 precincts reporting, voters approved District 4 County Commission candidate Rodney Brooks, Solicitor-General incumbent Robert Stokely and Coroner candidate Ray Yeager, Jr. in the Republican primary.

Senoia man charged in connection with nightclub murder case

A Senoia man was arrested Monday by Peachtree City police in connection with an investigation into an assault outside a nightclub June 28 that led to the death of a Hampton man.

James Armond Blackmon, 23, of Peeks Crossings, was charged with making false statements and writings.

Senoia’s newest building plan to open March 1

Senoia’s skyline should be a little bigger by the first quarter of 2009.

During the City Council meeting Monday night, developer Scott Tigchelaar said his company was ready to proceed with a new building on Main Street.

School lunch prices will rise by 25 cents for the 2008-09 school year.

The Coweta County Board of Education raised school meal prices in response to rising food prices for school system cafeterias.  The prices will allow the school system’s cafeteria’s to continue to be self-supporting.

Bond granted for Veitch

The Coweta business owner accused of killing a Norcross construction worker Gaston Gonzales outside a work site June 28 on Trammell Road was granted bond June 7. A bond of $100,000 was set for Jason Veitch who is accused of murdering the Senoia Drywall sub-contractor. Veitch maintains the death was not intentional, saying that the shotgun he used to jab Gonzales went off.

Newnan’s big celebration is Friday

Main Street Newnan will kick off the city’s Independence Day activities with the annual parade at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 4. The parade starts at the Veterans Park at the corner of Temple and Jackson Street and continues down Jackson and LaGrange to conclude at Newnan High School. 

Bond denied in fatal shooting

A Norcross man died after being shot just before 1 a.m. June 28 at a 55 Trammell Road home construction site near Grantville. He was shot at point blank range below the neck with a 12-gauge shotgun by J. Veitch Construction owner Jason Veitch. A bond petition for Veitch was denied in Coweta Superior Court earlier this week.
