Stokely re-elected as solicitor

Nearly 14 percent of Coweta County voters turned out Tuesday for the Democratic and Republican primaries. With 29 of 30 precincts reporting, voters approved District 4 County Commission candidate Rodney Brooks, Solicitor-General incumbent Robert Stokely and Coroner candidate Ray Yeager, Jr. in the Republican primary. Also victorious in Republican Public Service Commission seats were Doug Everett and Lauren McDonald. And in the Democratic primary, U.S. Senate candidates Jim Martin and Vernon Jones will face each other again in a run-off election while the Public Service Commission race saw Jim Powell take the night.

Brooks in the commission race defeated Gary DeGeorge, Jr. 63.74 percent to 36.26 percent, or 986 votes to 561. Stokely bested Randy Coggin 61.56 percent to 38.44 in the Solicitor-General slot, receiving 4,272 votes to 2,268. And in the Coroner contest, and Yeager took 4,385 votes to Mike Hutson’s 2,270, or 65.89 percent to 34.11.

In the Democratic primary, U.S. Senate candidate Vernon Jones took 39.89 percent of the vote, or 740 votes, while Jim Martin garnered 29.11 percent, or 540 votes. Also in the senate race, Dale Cardwell took 22.26 percent with 413 votes, Rand Knight took 6.2 percent with 115 votes and Josh Lanier received 47 votes, or 2.53 percent. The winner of the run-off will face Sen. Saxby Chambliss in November.

And in the Public Service Commission races, Democrat Jim Powell bested Bob Indech 86.06 percent to 13.94 percent, or 1,346 votes to 218, for the seat to succeed Angela Speir. On the Republican side, Lauren McDonald, Jr. defeated Pam Davidson with 3,139 votes to 2,687, or 53.88 percent to 46.12 percent in Speir’s seat. And in Doug Everett’s seat, the incumbent defeated Rick Collum 61.74 percent to 38.26 percent, or 3,747 votes to 2,322.

The vote tally includes 29 of 30 precincts reporting, 96.67 percent, and showed 8,926 ballots cast out of 65,431 registered voters, an 13.64 percent turnout.
