Suspects still on the loose in Coweta bank robberyThu, 07/31/2008 - 3:29pm
By: Ben Nelms
An investigation into the robbery of Southern Community Bank in Newnan by two men late Tuesday morning is ongoing. Coweta Sheriff’s investigators said no weapons were used and no one was injured. Some aspects of the robbery show a familiarity to a July 21 attempted robbery in east Coweta and a July 23 robbery in Griffin. The July 29 robbery occurred just after 11:30 a.m. when the two entered the bank on Ga. Highway 34 and Sullivan Road. One of the suspects, dressed as a woman and wearing a wig and false breasts, handed the teller a note demanding money, said Maj. James Yarbrough. The suspect was said to be a light-skinned male approximately 18-20 years old, 6 feet in height and weighing 150 pounds, Yarbrough said, adding that he wore a red blouse, a dark coat and large sunglasses. The second suspect, a dark-skinned male approximately 5’10”-6’0” and weighing 150 pounds also took money from bank employees, Yarbrough said. The man wore a button-down long-sleeve shirt, dark pants, sunglasses and a black baseball cap, said Yarbrough. The suspect also carried a backpack, Yarbrough said. Yarbrough said no weapons were produced during the robbery. The suspects exited the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash and ran toward the rear of the bank. They entered a mid-sized light blue or silver car that was waiting for them. The exact make and model of the car is not currently known, said Yarbrough. Witnesses said the vehicle exited the bank and entered the nearby SummerGrove residential development. Officers closed the area and searched cars matching the get-away car’s description for nearly four hours but found nothing. The July 29 robbery at Southern Community Bank had several similarities to two recent bank hold-ups. The 1st National Bank in Griffin was robbed by a single male wearing a white dress shirt and black tie and carrying a dark blue backpack. An attempted robbery two days earlier at 1st National Bank of Georgia at Thomas Crossroads came by way of a nicely dressed black male, described as 5’6”-5’10” and weighing 150 pounds. The man was carrying a book bag. Anyone with information on any of these robberies is asked to contact Coweta Sheriff’s Office at (770) 253-1502. login to post comments |
