T-Mobile towers approved

Coweta commissioners maintained they had no choice last week but to follow a court order to approve a special use permit by T-Mobile to construct a 150-foot cell phone tower on Minix Road and another on Orren’s Pond Road. Commissioners heard concerns and objections by adjacent residents but voted unanimously to approve the permit.

Commissioners sign agreement with public health

Coweta County commissioners Dec. 11 signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Georgia Division of Public Health (DPH) District 4 to address aspects of the county’s participation to facilitate the planning, plan evaluation and future exercises relating to pandemic influenza. While not present in the United States, the H5N1 strain of influenza, commonly referred to as avian flu, has been slowly spreading among humans in Asia and Africa and has become one of the world’s most virulent killers.

County commission discusses hunting at state park

It seems that some hunters are taking advantage of the situation on Chattahoochee Bend State Park property in north Coweta. And that is something Coweta commissioners believe should stop. Commissioners Dec. 16 voted to request that Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) either eliminate hunting or limit the number of hunters and hunting days on the property.

Senoia Optimists honor local students

The Optimist Club of Senoia hosted its annual Youth Appreciation Banquet on December 4, 2008 in recognition of students at East Coweta High School and Northgate High School. Senoia Optimist member David Gay was the chair of the event which was held at the Senior Citizens’ Center in Senoia.

Local tests set for Census jobs

Part-time temporary workers are being sought to help administer the U.S. Census starting next year.

Most of the positions require working evenings and weekends. Potential employees must take a test at a selected date and time.

Big night for music tomorrow in Coweta

The Christmas concert of the Centre Strings orchestra will be held at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County on Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. Admission is free. The repertoire will feature a variety of classical works for the Christmas season performed in a casual atmosphere. This concert will provide a great experience for the whole family and is a good way to introduce children to classical and chamber music and to celebrate the Christmas season.

First blood drive in Senoia is a success, exceeds goal

The Optimist Club of Senoia sponsored its first-ever blood drive for the Senoia area on November 28.  The community drive, held at the Senoia United Methodist Church from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., had been targeted by American Red Cross officials to bring in 33 pints of life-saving blood.  The local effort exceeded this goal by bringing in a total of 38 pints.

Senoia-Bogee office proposal nuked by council

It was a long time coming, but in the end Senoia City Council Dec. 1 denied the Rockaway Road annexation and rezoning request by Bogee Development, LLC that would have relocated their company headquarters to the 4 acre site that is surrounded by city limits on the east, west and south. Council members voted unanimously to deny the application.

'Adult oriented" store coming to Thomas Crossroads

One of Coweta County’s new businesses may not be the dime-a-dozen type, but it’s owner says it fills a need. Coweta resident and Starship CEO Kelly Rogers said the new Thomas Crossroads location that will sell “adult-oriented” and other items is expected to open in mid-January.

Coweta said “yes” to Saxby Chambliss, with nearly 75 percent of voters Dec. 2 postured to keep him in Washington, as 42 percent of Coweta’s 70,758 registered voters went to the polls.

Senoia adds historical preservation to 09 budget

Senoia City Council made a minor change to the $2.11 million General Fund Budget that takes effect Jan. 1. Council members Dec. 1 voted unanimously to add $1,800 for historical preservation and reduce the Financial Administration portion of the budget to offset it.

Police: Gunman shot another then killed himself

It appears that the murder/suicide at an east Coweta County residence last weekend stemmed from a domestic dispute. In its wake, 14 year-old Anthony Olbert was killed by his stepfather, Newnan resident Reginald Hines, who subsequently turned the gun on himself after shooting his wife’s uncle and chasing his wife Michella down the street.
