Coweta County School Board Dec. 9 signed off on calendars for the next two school years. Calendars are posted on-line at www.cowetaschools.org

The 2009-10 calendar adopted by the board will begin school on Friday August 7, 2009 and end the school year on Friday, May 28, 2010, said school system Public Information Officer Dean Jackson. The 2010-11 school calendars will begin on Thursday, August 5, 2010 and end the school year on Friday, May 27, 2011.

Jackson said both calendars follow a similar structure to the 180-day calendars used in recent years.

The school board considered several options for the upcoming school calendars, including a version that began the school year later in August and ended the first semester in January, after the Christmas and New Year’s break.

Several calendars were posted for public comment via an online survey through Dec. 4. Jackson said more than 3,000 responses were gathered through the survey. Forty-eight percent of respondents indicated a preference for the calendars adopted by the board on Tuesday. Thirty-two percent indicated preference for the calendars that began school later in August and 20 percent indicated a preference for calendars that were similar to the versions adopted but did not include the October holiday, Jackson said.
