It is a different kind of work, one where lives are put at risk so that other lives might be saved. Seven Newnan firefighters who saved a life during 2008 have been honored with the Annual Life Saver Award.

Chief David Whitley announced award recipients for an honor that has been presented for the past 5 years. To receive the award a firefighter must be brought a victim back from unconsciousness with no pulse and heartbeat by using CPR or with the use of a defibrillator. Newnan had 7 firefighters this year that accomplished the goal with 2 lives saved, said Newnan Public Information Officer Gina Snider.

“The award is a great honor for the firefighters and the city of Newnan Fire Department, as we are here to save lives,” said Whitley.

Those receiving the 2008 Life Saver Award were: Capt. Jeff Patterson, firefighter Buddy Hamby, firefighter Derrell Zackery, pump engineer Shane Byrom, firefighter Dennis Boone, firefighter Greg Pierce and firefighter Howard Martin.
