Relay for Life Coweta celebrated its 15th year on May 2 and 3 at the Coweta Fairgrounds in Newnan. With 364 cancer survivors registered to join 69 teams of volunteers who would walk for twelve hours to support the American Cancer Society’s efforts to raise funds for research and patient services, the scene was picture perfect as the sun set over the Opening Ceremonies. The Relay theme for 2008 was “Racing For A Cure” and the enthusiasm and excitement of the teams in demonstrating the theme was filled with creativity and caring. The evening began with presentation of colors by the East Coweta High School ROTC followed by welcome by Coweta Schools Superintendent Blake Bass. The cancer survivors led the evening celebration with the honorary first lap. The teams of walkers then took to the track and began the twelve hours of walking in honor of or in remembrance of a family member or friend. As the sun set the midway was illuminated and encircled by torches and candles that would burn throughout the night to remind the teams why they were walking. The night was filled with music to keep the walkers motivated and at 7 a.m. awards were presented to the teams during the Celebrate Fight Back Ceremony. $180,000 has been collected to date and efforts will continue through August 31 to bring that total to $200,000. login to post comments |
