A resurfacing and widening project on Ga. Highway 54 in Coweta County will cut traffic down to one lane during the overnight hours starting Tuesday.

The lane closures will last from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Friday from Ga. Highway 16 to Fischer Road, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

During the closures, only one lane of traffic will be open, and vehicles must follow a pilot car.

The project is expected to take three weeks, and the schedule may change pending weather and other issues, officials said.

Personnel and heavy equipment will be in the area working close to travel lanes, so motorists are urged to use extreme caution, officials said. There will be message boards, signs, barricades, barrels and cones to direct vehicles through the area.

For updated information on this and other projects, motorists can call 511, the state’s free telephone information service for construction projects on interstate and state highways. The system can also be used to reach a live operator to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day.
