Fayette’s first history grant funded by the Teaching American History (TAH) Project has come to an end.

Nineteen Fayette County social studies educators finished the three-year grant titled “Linking American History: Past to Present” by studying in Washington, DC in June. The program was a combination of efforts of Fayette, Henry and Cobb County school systems.

The Fayette County Youth Council of the NAACP is kicking off its first year of Peer to Peer Tutoring.

This new tutorial program will focus on all school subjects and standardized tests, such as CRCT, GHGT, and SAT of all students grades K-12. The goal is to enlighten and help the youth in the community with core and other academic subjects.

The Fayette Democratic Women will host Mike McGraw, candidate for US Congress in the third Congressional district (formerly the eighth district), on Saturday, Aug. 12. The breakfast meeting will be held at Blue Moon Farm, the home of Dr. Richard and Judith Moore, in Fairburn (Fayette County), starting at 9:20 a.m.

A new coach will be working in every Georgia high school this year – a “graduation coach.”
The coaches, championed by Gov. Sonny Perdue, will work in each of Georgia’s 385 high schools on ground-level strategies for keeping students in school until they receive their diploma. The new coaches will gather Aug. 8-10 to discuss strategies and receive training on high school completion.

Offshoot Productions has announced a partnership with Target for sponsorship of the theatre company’s “Fairy Tale Project.” A combination of playwrights and actors will use improvisation techniques to create an original audience participation play for children, to be presented in Tyrone in the winter of 2007 with a subsequent tour of schools, libraries and other venues.

Student arrested with several weapons, 150+ rounds of ammo in car

A possible attack on Whitewater High School was foiled Monday morning when a student was arrested after several loaded weapons were found in his vehicle, deputies said.
