Union City’s recent plan to annex 43 parcels of largely undeveloped land along South Fulton Parkway was turned down by Fulton County Commission at the board’s Aug. 2 meeting.

The parcels are located on the north and south sides of the parkway from Roosevelt Highway on the east past Ga. Highway 92 on the west. Voting down the annexation move, commissioners said the proposal would vioate Georgia law by creating unincorporated islands and forming non-contiguous connections between parcels. Those procedural inaccuracies require that Union City rework its annexation proposal and resubmit it to the county. Commissioners agreed that the issue could be resolved in time for the city to meet the Oct. 30 annexation deadline.

Atlanta and the cities all over South Fulton were given the opportunity by Georgia Genral Assembly to annex areas of unincorporated South Fulton prior to the vote in summer 2007 on whether to create the cities of Chattahoochee Hills and South Fulton. The cities have until October 30 to complete the annexations. Currently, those cities have announced their intention to annex nearly 25,000 acres of unincorporated South Fulton. That acreage is located primarily in the area that would constitute the City of South Fulton.

The move to create the new cities came after the successful incorporation efforts of Sandy Springs last year and the legislatively-approved move earlier this year to create the cities of Milton, Johns Creek, South Fulton and Chattahoochee Hills. Voters in Johns Creek and Milton voted last month to form those cities.
