An experimental plane crashed at Falcon Field around 8 a.m. this morning, killing the sole occupant inside, officials said.

The crash site was located on airport property but off the north end of the runway. Planes continued to take off and land while officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board reviewed the crash scene.

The aircraft was a SkyStar Vixen, an experimental plane that can be built at home from a kit. Daniel Egy, an FAA safety inspector who briefed the press at around noon today, said that the crash occurred during take-off.

Egy said that the FAA was investigating the details surrounding the crash and could not release them at this time. The investigation could take months, Egy said.
