A contractor has been selected for the widening of Ga. Highway 74 from Ga. Highway 54 to just south of Crosstown Road in Peachtree City.

APAC Southeast Inc. will perform the $28.8 million project, which must be completed by Oct. 31, 2008, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. A start date has not been determined, but that will occur at an upcoming pre-construction conference, officials said.
The project is sure to impact commuters from south Peachtree City and Senoia who depend on Hwy. 74 to travel to work and back each day.
The state will be expanding Hwy. 74 from two to six lanes, and there are also plans for concrete sound barriers along portions of the route.

This is the first phase of a two-pronged project to widen Hwy. 74 from Hwy. 54 to Ga. Highway 85. The second phase will include the widening from Crosstown Road to Hwy. 85, but bids have not yet been advertised, officials said. That phase will consist of widening from two to four lanes.
APAC’s bid was awarded by the DOT on July 21.

for 6 lanes of traffic on Hwy. 74? 4 lanes, sure. But 6? Makes me wonder how much annexation and high density housing is on the plate of our current city 'leaders'. Shove over people...make room, make room.

And other parts south trying to get to I-85...Better to have a plan than not...

WE were over in Newnan, Friday. First time in a long time because of the roads.

Their shopping area is a nightmare for traffic.

Last time over they were expanding and adding turn lanes.

Guess what? Again they were expanding and adding more turn lanes.

They have big time problem in that area.

My Sis lives off of 400 at Post Road in "The Vickery". It's a nightmare day and night.

I was in Newnan yesterday, the traffic was exagerated for sure due to school starting tomorrow and the "tax free" holiday. It was as bad yesterday as I have ever seen it, this was around 3 PM.

make their own 6 lane highways. I've been in Braelinn Village for 12 yrs now and cannot remember a time when there was a backup on 74 in that area that would only be remedied by a 6 lane hwy. I understand planning for the future. But I can't even vision what 6 lanes and concrete sound barriers are gonna look like in front of Gilroys. And where else in Fayette is there a 6 lane road?

I'm almost positive, the 4 lanes will run from 54 south to Crosstown. I'm assuming the proposed 6 lanes is for 74 N to I-85, but I've been wrong before.

What are your thoughts about GRTA in Fayette County?

I can only hope that whoever designed this road widening project was smart enough to NOT put in those curb-cuts, but rather make a center turn lane.

Additionally, I hope that each light that is installed will have the left turn signal arrow installed. When I asked about that some years ago I was told that they are only installed if traffic patterns warrant it. But that’s a “Catch 22” answer. People would turn left on different streets if the turn lights were installed, thus altering the traffic pattern.

You can look at the design at city hall. The turning lanes are there in the center, but so is the median - that's the only way to do it safely. It is a great design if everyone realizes it is a major highway through an industrial park designed to move traffic in and out of the city quickly. It ain't pretty, but it will move traffic. Just don't expect something like Peachtree Parkway - more like Camp Creek Parkway.

This will be a perfect place for the beautification group to do what they did along 54 and 74 north to soften the impact of a major highway. Let's hope Mayor Brown, the second remembered to include that in his negotiations with the DOT.

Do you know if the “map” is available online?

Another thing it needs is good clear signage. I can’t tell you how many times I, and 60 other vehicles, have been behind a truck that doesn’t know where to turn.

Once a truck attempted to enter the FAA facility, not realizing what it was, in order to turn around and the guard stopped him and made him back out of the facility onto 74. Let me tell you, that was fun to watch. Can’t blame the guard; having an unscheduled 50 foot tractor trailer pull into the entrance of a secure facility most likely didn’t make his day.
