Tyrone annexation request revealedMon, 08/07/2006 - 9:20am

The Fayette County Commission is leaning towards opposing an annexation proposed by the Town of Tyrone. The property in question is 16.7 acres off Trickum Creek Road and it backs up to Trickum Creek, a fact that drew the commission’s interest at its Wednesday afternoon meeting. The property is currently zoned agricultural-residential but the city is proposing an R-42 zoning that would allow a minimum lot size of one acre, the smallest allowable for a property that will be served by a septic tank. Commission chairman Greg Dunn noted that Trickum Creek feeds into Line Creek, which will be one of the county’s main sources of drinking water when the long-planned Lake McIntosh is built to the west of Peachtree City. Only 5.6 acres of the site is developable, but the commission worried that the intention to build just one home on the property could change to as many as five homes with the proposed zoning from Tyrone. It was also noted that the county has more strict waterway buffer requirements than the town of Tyrone has. Also, the county has plans to enhance Trickum Creek Road into an arterial design, and the development of this property could hamper that, officials said. The commission voted unanimously to send a notice of intent letter indicating it may formally object to the annexation. A new state law requires counties to turn annexation requests from cities around in a handful of days, which Dunn said is a bad idea to begin with. login to post comments |
