Forget Iraq, can we agree on this?

And to think that in my “youth” I thought that politics were boring.

I just finished reading The Citizen and I have to say that during portions of my reading that my hackles were up. I had just about completed my responses to Mr. Finnegan and Mr. Parker when it dawned on me that this could get into a discussion that might have elicited back-and-forth responses for weeks.

Bush can’t win for losing in media bias

The mainstream news media has once again shown their blatant bias toward President Bush.

Previous to his Veterans Day speech where he pointed out that his critics are hypocrites and they’re making false accusations against him, various mainstream publications repeatedly ran articles quoting his anti-war and Democratic critics as if they were making factual accusations.

Bush a liberal? In your dreams

I was totally baffled by Paul Wilder’s letter accusing Trey Hoffman of having an identity crisis (“Bush most liberal of U.S. presidents”), until I realized that everything he doesn’t like has to be called “liberal.” It seems to me that the crisis is Mr. Wilder’s and that he is in serious denial about today’s conservatives.

Reasons to say NO to any PTC annexation

The push by some for annexation of the county acreage west of Ga. Highway 74 in Peachtree City has me concerned.

For most of us who have moved to Peachtree City, the land use plan and accompanying zoning have represented a guarantee of what we were investing in, a contract with residents who bought into promises about what Peachtree City would be in the future.

Flu vaccine: Some bargain

I note in The Citizen article that flu vaccine is still available at several supermarkets and other “retailers” throughout Fayette County.

No WWII-style surrender ahead in terrorism war

I guess it‘s just too strong an image, even after all these years, even after Korea, Vietnam and Gulf War I. It’s an image we desperately want to see in our minds eye when we hear President Bush say we must “stay the course”; it has been burned into our brains for 60 years as how war is resolved.

‘Mixed emotions’ about week honoring our veterans

It’s Veterans Week and for the third consecutive year I am writing an article that I hope will appear in local papers during this Veterans Week. I wish other of my comrades would also express their views or write their stories at this time. I am sure local feature editors would welcome the opportunity to fill space in their Veterans Week editions.

McCarthy’s legacy: Some corrections

“Since history isn’t taught very well in this country ... “ Had Mr. Hoffman begun and ended his tome with this line, I could think of nothing more ironic. His entire reasoning is ripe with irony, the shame being his utter ignorance of the fact.

Bush most liberal of U.S. presidents

In reading Trey Hoffman’s comments regarding liberals (“Liberals seem like poor losers”), it occurs to me that he has an identity crisis.

Live in hurricane-prone areas? Move, don’t whine

I just read a story on the Fox News Web site regarding President Bush’s visit to hurricane-stricken South Florida.

Never before has the saying, “It comes with the territory,” been more appropriate when it comes to these pitiful people complaining about slow response time on the part of the government in delivering water, etc.

‘I believe ...’

That in the beginning was God, and God was the beginning. Whatever there is, was, or ever will be created was and is created by God.

Don’t do business with former Delta executives

I read someone’s comments about Leo Mullin being on the board of directors for Bell South. After that, I googled Michelle Burns’ name and found she is doing her thing with Cisco, Mirant Corp., former Southern Energy, and Wal-Mart.

DirectPAC types trample freedom

The toughest thing for me to remember is that we fought other nations so that groups like the DirectPAC can have the opportunity to trample on our freedoms and bully us.

Oxendine fails to help consumers

I have just completed a conversation with Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine. He telephoned me after I sent an e-mail calling upon him to explain his failure to protect consumers from price-gouging health insurance companies.

Best candidate for mayor: Brown

Thank you so very much for delivering The Citizen to our house every Wednesday morning. We especially appreciate receiving it early.

Peachtree City’s occupational tax unfair to people who work at home

My father is retired and lives in Peachtree City. He writes magazine articles and, every couple of years or so, a book. Because he writes in his home, Peachtree City charges him $100 a year because he has a home-based business. He is the sole employee.

Comm. Pfeifer: ‘I don’t hate Brown’

I am writing this and sending it into the newspaper before Tuesday, Nov. 8, so I don’t know at this point how the municipal elections are going to turn out. I’d like to say some things to the candidates and their supporters, mainly addressed to those who have done this for the first time.

Time to say goodbye to dirt road delivery?

The most recent Citizen newspaper delivered to my home (which a neighbor picked up for me while I was away for a short vacation) had a note attached to it which informed me this was the last one. It explained The Citizen would no longer be delivered on “dirt roads,” and I do, as a matter of fact, live on a road which the county has not paved.

TDK and the election: Wait for infrastructure

There are some basic design principles that must be followed in order for any development to function properly.

The foundational principle is that the infrastructure should be in place before any development begins. We have all seen what has happened at the intersection of Ga. highways 54/74 when the development (big box stores in this case) was installed before the infrastructure was ready.

Some PTC residents organize to oppose new storm-water utility fees

The first storm-water utility meeting for Peachtree City was held Oct. 19, 2005. The following is a breakdown of what was discussed followed by why this is not fair to the citizens of Peachtree City.

‘Progressive solutions for new changes’; freeze taxes

I moved to the Atlanta area and Peachtree City in 1994 due to military assignment at Ft. McPherson. Before the move, I had visited a friend that resided in Peachtree City for years. After [he] show[ed] me the area, I knew from that point on I wanted to settle in the city. The decision was based on the quality of life and peaceful serene atmosphere of the community.

‘Desperately need road from MacDuff to Hwy. 74’

Recently there have been several attempts by my political opposition to misinterpret my position on annexation.

The term “annexation” became a four-letter word in Peachtree City around 10 years ago as a sole large development company began extending its reach by using annexation.

‘Keeping PTC green while lowering your taxes’

Mr. Rothley, thank you very much for your letter to the editor, “Thompson plans to tax every PTC home sale,” which was posted in The Citizen on Wednesday Oct. 12, 2005.

Direct PAC endorses 2 for mayor

DIRECT PAC leadership has met with all the political newcomers vying for the three contested seats in the November election. Our objectives have been to provide another avenue for the candidates to communicate their views on four critical issues that incoming officials will have to contend with, and to provide our first-hand impressions of the people themselves.

Firefighters union makes picks

Professional Firefighters of Peachtree City Local 4008 is proud to endorse the following candidates for the upcoming Peachtree City elections.

Brown pitches in to help older areas

Considering the negative comments being made about Steve Brown and all of his mistakes as mayor of our city, I would like to inject a positive on his behalf, especially when it involves the revitalization of the older communities in Peachtree City.

‘Vote in only no-annexation candidate: Dan Tennant’

I strongly encourage all voters to support the only candidate who has come out clearly against further annexation to Peachtree City, namely Dan Tennant.

‘Tennant unafraid of past, will do right for future’

I appreciate Jon Shatto coming to the defense of Dan Tennant. I have sat by and watched this man (Tennant) be attacked for far too long. Let me tell you a little bit about the Dan Tennant that I know.
