The origins of the Christmas tree

Have you ever wondered why you have a Christmas tree? How did this custom start? Why do people want to have tree inside their home, dropping needles on the floor and giving their pets something to bat around, chew on or play with? The origin of the Christmas tree stretches back close to 1,400 years.

The reality of Santa Claus
By JOHN HATCHER
Religion Columnist

I was afraid of Santa Claus. Don’t get me wrong. I was very much appreciative of the toys he faithfully left for me year after year. But you see, I never met the man. For probably a host of reasons, my folks never got me to the spot where Santa was making personal appearances.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Critic is off-base on Solicitor Harris’s car

Mr. Myers, shame on you. I don’t know who you are, and I have never seen you at any of the county Republican breakfasts, meetings, or other political events. I bet you don’t even live in Fayette County, but instead in Upson County, because you have no clue as to the services rendered by my husband, Steve Harris. I tried to look up your name in the phone book, but it wasn’t listed; ours is.

Harris got car despite commission policy

I read the letter to the editor about Solicitor General Steve Harris’ car use and I knew I had read something about this same controversy before. I searched on Google and found it on The Citizens’ archive page at http://www.thecitizennews.com/main/archive-030611/news/fp-01.html. Basically, it was a June 11, 2003 article written by The Citizen’s John Thompson called, “County to lower taxes, freeze hiring” in which he described the county’s final budget battle.

Free car for solicitor is abuse of public trust

It’s really sad that I am not the least surprised by the hypocrisy practiced by our local political officials. One only has to read about the financial chaos surrounding the Development Authority of Peachtree City (DAPC) and the county’s subsequent involvement to realize that the taxpayer always ends up holding the bag. So, Solicitor Steve Harris’ abuse of his office and the Fayette taxpayers by passing on the cost of his commute to the hard-working men and women of this county should not surprise anyone.

Put school concerts in The Citizen calendar

I appreciate the paper delivered to me weekly, but I’m still looking for a listing of the Christmas (winter) musical programs of the local high schools. I called the schools last year and got the information I needed to attend these concerts.

Peace, peace and the attacks on U.S. heritage

I could have predicted it. The liberal voices defending the Peace tree bemoaned the narrowness of their opponents, reminded us of the real history of the Christmas tree, and chastised us for spending our time on such silly issues while people starve.

No pagan history lesson needed

I guess all of us conservative, right wing, holy-rollers got a good lesson about the Christmas tree. Thank you! However, the whole point of the letter was missed. I don’t believe anything was mentioned about the origins of the Christmas tree. But then again, this is nothing new for the liberals out there, trying to distract the public from discussing the issue at hand.

Pros and cons of subsidized housing in PTC

Good hands? Insurance woes raise questions

My letter doesn’t concern elections or any news for the in-crowd in Peachtree City, but will be of interest to senior citizens in our county.
