Fayette students excel in MGC program

The Georgia Academy of Mathematics, Engineering and Science (GAMES) is a residential, joint enrollment program for top-performing high school juniors and seniors that enables them to receive their high school diplomas and college associate degrees simultaneously. Fayette County students are jointly enrolled with Sandy Creek High and Fayette County High.

GAMES Director Lisa Whitaker said the program is in its seventh year, and its purpose is to provide an academically enriched learning environment in mathematics, engineering, science, computers, and health fields to selected students who are motivated to accelerate their high school and college educations. However, students of all majors of study are welcome in the GAMES program.

“GAMES is designed for those students seeking an academic peer group,” Whitaker said. “The curriculum is stringent, but students find a balance between class work and the many activities planned for them.”

“Post Secondary Option (PSO) programs are the best idea since sliced bread,” added GAMES student Michael Mathews of Fayetteville.

GAMES currently enrolls 64 students and this yearís class has an average SAT score of 1248 with an high school academic GPA of 3.9 and rank in the top 5 percent of MGC’s students with an average 3.5 GPA.

GAMES students have been accepted to Georgia Tech, University of Georgia, Emory, Wesleyan, Yale, Agnes Scott, Cal Tech, New York University, Florida State, University of Florida, and others.

Campus visitation days are scheduled for Saturday, March 6, and Saturday, Apr. 24.
