Starr’s Mill 2nd in tourney

Parkview came into town last weekend and scored a convincing win in the fifth annual Starr’s Mill Invitational wrestling tournament, finishing with 292 points to place far ahead of the host team, which was in second place with 180.

Finishing behind the Panthers were Jefferson (164), Kennesaw Mountain (117), Alexander (110), Lithia Springs (92.50), Woodstock (90), Cherokee (79), Osborne (79), Sprayberry (73.50), East Coweta (72), Creekside (53), LaGrange (39), Forest Park (37), Lowndes County (36.50), Douglas County (28), McIntosh (22) and Our Lady Of Mercy (20).

Parkview sent 10 wrestlers into the finals of the 14 weight classes, taking home 6 championships.

For the Panthers, Michael Cosper (135 lbs., 14-2) won his second tournament in as many weeks. Tyler Kourajian (130, 13-4) and Tyler Freeman (152, 12-5) both wrestled well to finish in second place. Also medalling were Derek King (103, 3th), Cory Radcliffe (112, 3rd), Steven Savage (119, 4th), Devin King (125, 3rd), Davey Woods (145, 4th), Patrick Kellerman (160, 3rd), Bradley Conner (215, 4th) and Kevin Pierce (275, 6th).

Among the finalists this weekend were some outstanding scholar athletes. Junior JJ Brueshaber of Jefferson Co. has a 4.0 GPA and hopes to study medicine. East Coweta’s Cory O’Brien, a senior, also has a 4.0 GPA and hopes to ride his 1390 SAT into the Air Force Academy, Georgia or Penn. Georgia has already accepted Parkview’s Steven Stromie (3.93 GPA, 1200 SAT), while the Panthers’ own Tyler Freeman (4.0 GPA, 1460 SAT) has accepted an appointment to West Point.

Starr’s Mill heads to Gwinnett County Dec. 30 for the Collins Hill Duals, and will travel to Alabama Jan. 2-3 for another tournament.
