Unemployed get extended benefits
By MAC COLLINS
Congressman

Last week marked the beginning of the 108th Congress. With 229 Republicans, 204 Democrats, one Independent, and one vacant seat, Representative Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) was elected, and sworn in to serve his third term as speaker of the House of Representatives. Shortly thereafter, the Oath of Office was administered by the Speaker to each newly elected Member of the House and the House Rules for the 108th Congress were adopted. Once again, it is a tremendous privilege to have been elected for a sixth term to represent the people of Georgia in the United States House of Representatives.

There is a lot I can understand about our culture, but come on, we are nuts. I thought it was dumb enough when the lady came up with the failure-free gym program. For example, so kids wouldn't feel failure during skipping rope, she had them remove the rope. That's right, they have two kids simulating turning the rope and the child in the middle is jumping up and down.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Why not business HQ buildings on Southside?

Let's focus on maintaining, and even improving the quality of life in Fayetteville and all of Fayette County. Of particular interest now is the Southside Plan currently scheduled for change at the Jan. 16 [Fayetteville] City Council meeting.

To fit F'ville's image, install neon digital courthouse clock

I have often found that words of sensationalism tend to foment not only a keen interest within readers, but also incite genuine human emotion, even when genuine human is not warranted. Whether accurate or not, I have compiled a priority list of sorts for this wonderful city of Fayetteville, a city that day by day grows increasingly more diluted in foliage and consequently, more analogous to Riverdale.

Forget restoring honored but divisive Rebel flag; support unifying banner

While campaigning for governor, Sonny Perdue said he favored a referendum on the Georgia state flag. He should live up to his campaign pledge. But the referendum should not be about the return of the 1956 flag. Be honest with yourself, that standard was designed not to honor Confederate ancestors but to stick a thumb in the eye of those wishing to end segregation.

Road shortfall is solely Mayor Brown's fault

Last week I wrote that [Peachtree City] Mayor [Steve] Brown squandered nearly a million dollars which was intended for critical road projects. Here's the full story.

No problems in PTC until Mayor Brown came along

Until Steve Brown came along, Peachtree City was the most successful planned community in the eastern United States. Until Steve Brown came along, Peachtree City was a gem in the state of Georgia, an economic powerhouse and a great place to live.

Tax incentive districts seem right way to go

Dear Mr. Mayor and councilmen, I wanted to forward the article to you, just in case you missed it in the AJC, "Self-taxing districts gain traction."

Teen needs unanswered in Fayette and Newton

I resided in Peachtree City from 1987 until 2001 when a career change dictated a move to Covington in Newton county 60 miles away, but a world away in law enforcement. Let me explain: Nov. 2 last year my son and eight of his so-called friends were out illegally making plastic bottles explode in yards. They apparently did this twice and one of the eight was bringing him home in a golf cart when pulled over by Gestapo-garbed police who reported it as if terroristic devices were being flung to hurt people. Aloof and arrogant, when I asked questions the lead officer said he didn't have time to discuss it with the likes of us.

Fayette officers are the finest

Recently two of my elderly neighbors fell in their homes. The 911 emergency people were called. They came immediately. They were very competent and did whatever was necessary to get these ladies to the hospital. Thankfully, they are both back home now.

Police officers deserve our thanks, better pay

This is a letter that's long overdue. I suppose that I'm like most folks and only see the police as a nuisance setting up speed traps and stuff like that. Nothing could be further from the truth!
