Fayette County High publications bring home honors

The 2002 edition of Pieces, Fayette County High School's literary magazine, has won first place with special merit in the American Scholastic Press Association's annual publication competition.

Each year the magazine takes home first place in the contest but this marks the first year that it has won with special merit. This ranking is given to publications that score over 900 points out of a possible 1,000 and are an outstanding overall example of a scholastic publication in format, content and presentation.

Students in Ashley Lawson's creative writing course design and publish the magazine. The students stay busy throughout the year not only working on the magazine but also fundraising to obtain money to publish it.

Unlike school newspapers in the county, the magazine receives no funding from the school system. It costs approximately $5,000 to publish Pieces annually and the students raise the money themselves through sponsorships, advertisements and fundraisers.

"Each year my students work very hard to finance and produce a quality magazine. I am very proud of our literary magazine and the students who make it possible," said Lawson.

Additionally, the school's yearbook, Golden Memories, was also a winner in the competition earning a first-place award. Judges ranked each publication on page design, story layout, graphics, headlining, cover design advertising placement and photography. The sponsor of the yearbook is Penny Pridgeon.
