Fayette County stands to get more than $5.5 million in transportation funds if the Atlanta Regional Commission's transportation plan gets the green light.

Fayette County public works director Lee Hearn said the millions are far more than Fayette County is used to getting.

"Chairman Greg Dunn and Sen. Mitch Seabaugh have done a really good job in getting our projects moved up," Hearn said.

The ARC's Transportation Improvement Plan has passed muster with the ARC's board, and Hearn said the county could see the funds start flowing soon.

The biggest project in the 2003-2005 plan is $5.07 million for right-of-way acquisition to widen Ga. Highway 74 to four lanes from Ga. Highway 54 to south of Crosstown Road.

Other projects in the plan include:

Reimbursing the county nearly $54,000 for transportation of the county's elderly and people with disabilities.

Realigning Huddleston Drive and Dividend Drive at a cost of $150,000.

Building the first phase of a multi-use trail down Redwine Road for $300,000. Hearn said the trail would start near Grady Avenue and end at Horseshoe Circle in the first phase.
