After repeatedly stating that they didn't want it, members of the Fayette County Board of Commissioners voted Thursday night to allow a commercial development across from the Starr's Mill school complex because they said they simply had no choice.

The Sandy Creek Patriots boys basketball team is now 10-2. They have won seven games in a row and have decimated their opponents in that span.

Gym South on the verge of another exciting season

You can barely see the building from the highway, but you need only see the parking lot to see how much is going on at Gym South. The facility has dance and cheerleading classes as well as gymnastic classes for boys and girls of all levels. The gymnastic teams recently wrapped up a successful year and now are preparing for the upcoming season, which begins in January.

The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) has announced the approval of a new Georgia state line class record on a 4-pound test line. The record whiterock bass was caught in West Point Lake.

Lakers enjoy soccer success after the season

The 2000 season was a record-setting year for the Clayton College & State University men's soccer team, and the program recently had another first when senior Josh Grenier was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Adidas Division II All-American Team.

May I wish you, all my readers, a Merry Christmas. I sincerely hope your house will be filled with good food, good friends, and good tidings this Christmas Season. I don't say it often, but let me thank you for your readership. Thank you for stopping to speak to me in the travel lanes of Fayette. Every time you do it, it blesses me and encourages me to keep on writing with you in mind. Now, here's my full Christmas wish for you and your house.

River's Edge Church plans 2000-candle cake and 'birthday for Jesus' celebration on Christmas Eve

Members of River's Edge Community Church will have a special celebration on Christmas Eve, singing 'happy birthday' to Jesus and lighting 2000 candles on a birthday cake.

Kenwood plans defensive driving class for seniors

Area senior citizens can sharpen their defensive driving skills and receive a certificate for discounted insurance by signing up for the AARP 55 Alive defensive driving class sponsored by the Primetimers at Kenwood Christian Church next month. The class is scheduled in two four-hour sessions, one on Jan. 6, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and one on Jan 20, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in room 303 of the church. Both sessions must be attended to receive the certificate.

Local radio personalities make special appearance in Plus One's new video

Morning radio show hosts Sheila Richards and Jerry Williams, of Peachtree City's J93.3 Christian radio station, make a special appearance in Plus One's latest video release, "Plus One: The Home Video." The video includes more than forty minutes of behind the scenes footage of Christian music's hottest boy band as well as two of their singles, "Written On My Heart" and "God Is In This Place."

Volunteer 'Friends' disappointed in city's lack of support for Main Street

I received the very disheartening news today that Shellie Reed - Main Street Director - has resigned her position. What a loss to the City of Fayetteville and the Main Street Program. Shellie brought a level of enthusiasm, professionalism, and dedication to the Main Street Program that had not been previously achieved.

Did Grinch steal Fayetteville's Christmas spirit this year?

It is very depressing to drive into Fayetteville another year and get little or no indication that this is the Christmas season. What is wrong with Fayetteville?

Tax inequity: City folks gets lots more sales tax rollbacks than county folks

As Fayette County residents, we all pay the 1 percent local option sales tax. That money does not disappear into a giant dark hole: except for about 1.5 percent of it which the state and the merchants keep, it reappears as income to the county government (which receives 47.5 percent), Peachtree City (35.64 percent), Fayetteville (11.36 percent), Tyrone (4.91 percent), and Brooks (0.59 percent). This is fact, not fiction.

Recently I was reading an article from a November Anchorage Daily News on Lessons in Coping. I know that the lower 48 has different concepts of what goes on here in Alaska. And I have learned in the past two and a half years of living in the "bush" that even people in Alaska have a misconception of what goes on in parts of their own state.
