Lakers enjoy soccer success after the season

The 2000 season was a record-setting year for the Clayton College & State University men's soccer team, and the program recently had another first when senior Josh Grenier was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Adidas Division II All-American Team.

Grenier, a 6-0, 191-lb. defender from Bedford, N.H., captained this year's Lakers' squad that finished with a school best 18-3-1 record, enroute to its first ever NCAA national tournament berth. The Lakers finished the season ranked 14th in the country.

From his sweeper position, Grenier anchored the CCSU defense, which only allowed 11 goals on the season and had one of the nation's lowest goals against averages.

Grenier started all 39 matches for which he played in his three-year career at Clayton State after transferring from New Hampshire College. At New Hampshire College, he played for current CCSU coach John Rootes and led the team to the NCAA Elite Eight and a 17-2-1 record.

Grenier was named to the 2000 All-Peach Belt Conference Team, the 2000 Peach Belt All-Tournament Team and the 1999 Peach Belt All-Tournament Team. He is the first Laker soccer player to be named first team All-American. Former players Adrian Drury, in 1996, and Stacy Washington, in 1992, were named honorable mention NAIA All-American.

Grenier was also among three Clayton College & State University men's soccer players who were recently named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Adidas Division II All-Southeast Region Teams. Forward Barry Casebeer and goalie Warren vander Westhuizen were the other members of the Lakers squad named to the team. Grenier and Casebeer were named to the first team All-Southeast squad, while Westhuizen was named to the second team.

A 6-1, 175 lb., sophomore forward from Austin, TX, Casebeer led the Lakers in scoring with 19 goals on the season, second best in CCSU history. He averaged two points per match and had eight game-winning goals. Barry was named to the Peach Belt All Conference Team and tied a school record with four goals in a single match against Florida Southern this season.

Westhuizen, a 6-4, 185 lb. sophomore from Johannesburg, South Africa, tied the NCAA record this season for number of shutouts by an individual goalie in a single season (14). He was ranked among nation's top goalies with a .473 goals against average for the season. Warren was named to Peach Belt All-Conference Team and All-Tournament Team. He played all 2093 minutes of the 2000 season.
