The Starr's Mill's wrestling team hosted the Starr's Mill Invitational last weekend and won it with 207.5 points. Alexander High School placed second overall with 185.5 points and Hiram High School placed third with 159 points.

The Panthers had ten wrestlers place within the top four. Jason Kiefer, 145, Ariston Bowers, 152, Christopher Coleman, 160, and Rusty Lyle, 171, placed first in their weight divisions. Kevin Trickey placed second in the 125 weight class, while Scott Hartpence placed second at 135 and Lee Gresham took second at 119. Danny Davidson placed third at 140, and Tyler Kourajian, 103, and Patrick Bates, 112, each placed fourth.

The Panthers will travel a few miles this weekend to compete in the Sandy Creek Christmas Classic, which will feature 33 teams. Some of the competing teams will be traveling quite a distance to get here, including Beach, Groves and Lowndes High School and Clarke Central High School. Clarke Central is where Coach Marty Hutsell, formerly of McIntosh High School, is currently coaching. Other teams competing in the tournament will be Fayette County, Northgate, LaGrange and Stockbridge.

"It will be a real grind," said Sandy Creek wrestling coach Damian Belvedere. "There are going to be a lot of state champions here this weekend and if you win here, you will be favored to win at the state meet."

The tournament begins at 4 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. on Saturday.

Sandy Creek placed third in a tournament at Landmark Christian School over the weekend. Larry Wright, 145, and Kedric Golston, 275, both placed first. Golston was named the most outstanding wrestler of the tournament. It was his first varsity tournament ever and he won his first four matches by pin in the first period.

"He is just a huge physical presence," said Belvedere. "He will be an outstanding wrestler."

Other placers at the tournament were Mutee Patrick, second place at 119, Chris Denny, second place at 103, John Auers, fourth place at 140 and Nick Dorsey, fourth place at 152. The Patriots are 6-6 this season and are a young team, filled with freshman and first year wrestlers. They will get a taste of the big time at their tournament this weekend.

McIntosh High School will host their annual Christmas Classic this at 8 a.m. this Friday. The Chiefs will also be competing against Troup County, tonight at 6 p.m.
