Snowfall comes a little early for Fayette this year; cold continues

The snowfall recorded in Peachtree City early Tuesday morning nearly equalled the average yearly snowfall for the area, according to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.

The snow also came early, as the winter season doesn't officially begin until Thursday. And more snow could come late Thursday or early Friday, said meterologist Jim Noel.

Noel said 1.7 inches of snow fell in the city overnight. The yearly snowfall is between one and two inches for the area, he added.

"We got our normal winter snowfall in one day," Noel said.

The precipitation started as rain and sleet before turning to snow, Noel said.

Temperatures are expected to climb a little today and Thursday before another cold front hits the area Friday, Noel added. It could get into the upper 30-degree range Wednesday under mostly sunny skies, he said. In the evening, temperatures should drop into the mid-20s, he added.

Most of the automobile accidents in the county Tuesday morning were minor, with vehicles sliding off the road, said Capt. Pete Nelms of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

One vehicle did roll over, but the driver wasn't seriously injured, he said.

The Ga. Highway 74 overpass in Tyrone was really slick, Nelms said. And with temperatures dropping the department would be keeping an eye on icing on local roads.

"I think a lot of people stayed home or delayed their commute and that really helped," Nelms said.

No accidents were reported in Fayetteville Tuesday morning although the roads were being checked for ice.

Roads in Peachtree City were clear Tuesday afternoon but were still wet, said acting Fire Chief Stony Lohr. The worry is that would create patches of black ice when the temperatures dip overnight, Lohr said.

Otherwise, however, no serious weather-related incidents occured in the city Tuesday morning and early afternoon, Lohr said.
