Fayette Scores High in MathFax CompetitionMathFax, a national math competition, began in the fall of 1996 with 20 schools participating and has quickly grown to over 700 schools nationwide. This competition was created to sharpen the participating student’s test taking math skills needed to do well on college entrance exams. Living Well Workshops Offer Help with Managing Chronic Disease SymptomsIf you struggle with ongoing symptoms of chronic disease such as fatigue, pain, stress/anxiety, muscle tension, difficult emotions or shortness of breath, there are new techniques available to help you deal with these symptoms. Fayette Senior Services is pleased to present Living Well: The Stanford University Chronic Disease Self-management Program, a six-week workshop designed to teach healthy behaviors to live more positively and less painfully with age or chronic diseases such as arthritis, diabetes or high blood pressure. The first of the six workshops will be held on Tuesday, April 15 from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. with the remaining classes scheduled for 4/22, 4/29, 5/6, 5/13 and 5/20. Manned by runners aka "dogs" Carl Eifert, Jeff Harris, Justin Smith and Alex Pearson and "musher" Niles Goodfellow, not seen, the sled truly is "Boy Made" and "Boy Powered" as per the rules. Leadership Fayette raises funds for children at Christian CityMembers of the Fayette Chamber of Commerce group, Leadership Fayette, are raising funds to purchase computers for the children's study labs at the new Children's Village at Christian City. As part of their fundraising efforts, a tag sale was held recently at Coldwell Banker offices on HWY 74 in Peachtree City. Christian City is a nonprofit organization that has been caring for abandoned and abused children in a residential setting on their campus in Union City for over forty three years. George Anderson was a BAR manBy Freddy Burdeshaw The line of infantry had moved steadily from the farm road across the field and into the woods, when suddenly on the left side George Anderson, a twenty-one year old BAR man, wheeled around and began firing. It was Christmas Day. The scene was the Battle of the Bulge, the decisive World War II showdown with the German Army in December 1944. Anderson, a native of Pittsburgh and Peachtree City resident, was not called a BAR man because he hung out in honky tonks or smoky saloons. Rather, he was carrying the big Browning Automatic Rifle or BAR. Coweta-Fayette Rotary Club gets charterA new Rotary Club has just recently been founded in the Coweta-Fayette area. Officially named the Rotary Club of Coweta-Fayette, the new club celebrated with a charter party last month at the Tyrone Depot event center. In addition to most of the 22 club members and their spouses, the evening also included a number of visiting Rotary leaders from across Rotary District 6900. Notables 3-29-08• Smith named to the dean's list Jared James Smith of Tyrone, Ga. has been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2007 semester at Georgia Southern University. To be eligible for the dean's list, a student must have at least a 3.50 grade point average and carry a minimum of 12 credit hours for the semester. Smith is majoring in international studies. Georgia Southern University, a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, offers more than 120 degree programs serving nearly 17,000 students. Celebrating 40 Years of PrideAnnual event raises funds for school band The Fayette County High School Band Boosters will sponsor their annual benefit event, the Miss Pride of Fayette County Pageant, on March 28 and 29 at F. A. Sams Auditorium in Fayetteville. This is the 40th year that the pageant has been held to raise money for the FCHS Band. The pageant gives young women from the age of 3 to seniors in high school the opportunity to prove why they are the pride of Fayette County. A promise kept to help Promise PlaceFayetteville students Amy Evans and Amy Wallace have earned Girl Scout’s highest honor, the Gold Award. Evans, daughter of Charlie and Lynnell Evans of Fayetteville, is 17 and a senior honor student at Fayette County High School. Wallace, daughter of Jeff and Terry Wallace, is 18 and a senior honor student at Whitewater High School. The girls do not belong to a troop but are individually registered as Juliettes with the Girl Scouts of Pine Valley Council. Between them they have 25 years of Scouting experience. Harris named STAR studentMichael Hollis Harris has been named the STAR Student for Starr’s Mill High School. Each year a top academic senior in each participating Georgia high school is named the STAR student for that high school. To obtain the STAR nomination, students must have the highest score in one sitting on the three-part SAT taken through the December test date of their senior year and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average. Suzanne B. Homan has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.
