Marie Powell, co-founder of Coweta Organization for Riding, Rehabilitation and Learning (CORRAL), accepted the Daughters of the American Revolution Community Service Award from Nancy Olsen, vice regent, General Daniel Newnan Chapter, NSDAR.

Adams named Artist of the Month for June

Trisha Adams has been named Newnan-Coweta Art Association’s Artist of the Month for June 2008.

Adams has sought out classes and workshops since picking up her first paintbrush seven years ago. Adams believes firmly in challenging herself as an artist and constantly growing her skills. She paints with watercolors and acrylics and also enjoys graphic and website design. You can find her work in homes and businesses across the United States. She also has two paintings in the annual NCAA member Juried Art Exhibit, which will be on display at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts off Lower Fayetteville road. The opening reception for this event is June 18, from 6–8 p.m.

It is with great sadness and undying admiration that the staff and volunteers of the Fayette County Animal Shelter and members of the Fayette County Humane Society mark the passing of dedicated volunteer, past-president, Fayetteville resident and beloved “2-legger,” Elaine Sherwood. Elaine passed away on January 26, 2008 following a valiant battle with lung cancer.

Michael “Mike” Kattness, a Peachtree City resident since the early 1980s, moved to Alaska early in 2007 to pursue a promising employment opportunity and to “see the glaciers before they melt.” Unfortunately, even though the job front was going well, he was diagnosed in June of 2007 with advanced stage multiple myeloma, cancer of the bone marrow.

Downtown Fayetteville got a big taste from a variety of menus at the seventh annual Taste of Fayette the weekend of May 17 at Stonewall Village.

Longbranch Steakhouse and Seafood won “Fayette’s Finest Taste” with their sampler of chicken, shrimp and steak and Bugaboo Creek Steak House’s rustic camping décor awarded them the “Most Amazing Booth.”

Boy Scouts Stephen Cook of Troop 275, Chip Freeney of Troop 309, Tommy Keen of Troop 275 and Boomer London of Troop 201 all received their Eagle Scout Awards at their Court of Honor held on Saturday, April 5. The four boys were Cub Scouts together and crossed over to Boy Scouts in fifth grade, joining Troop 275.

The second Thursday in May was the Day of Service for both AARP and Georgia Retired Educators Association (GREA). Fayette County Retired Educators Association (FCREA) is the local unit of GREA.

This year the local chapter of AARP combined forces with FCREA for a local community service project as their Day of Service activity.

Many of Fayette Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade chorus students were able to participate in a four day trip to Orlando, Fla. this spring. The Cub Chorus performed at the The MusicFest competition in Orlando. The Fayette Middle School Cub Chorus came in first place in the Junior High Choral Division.

Workshop at Fayette library teaches teens how to create their own comic books

Comic book fans and aspiring cartoonists ages 12 to 18 will soon get the opportunity to have a close encounter with one of Fayette County’s up-and-coming talents in the comic book world. Ed McKeogh, a professional illustrator and prize-winning cartoonist who lives in Peachtree City, invites teens to enter his “Comic Story Laboratory” on Tuesday, June 10 at 3 p.m. at the Fayette County Public Library. The free two-hour workshop is part of the “Metamorphosis” summer reading program for teens.

Fayette Senior Services celebrates 30 years

The Fayette Senior Services celebrated 30 years in existence by holding a Bluegrass Barbeque at its facility. Nearly 200 persons came to enjoy music, a barbecue supper cooked by a chef and a lot good fellowship.

Fayette County Public Library to participate in statewide Hawks-Thrashers summer reading challenge

In addition to its highly popular annual Summer Reading Program for children, teens, and adults, the Fayette County Public Library offers something extra this summer for sports fans entering kindergarten through 12th grade in the fall. The local library has joined a statewide reading incentive program called the Check It Out Reading Challenge. Each participant who reads at least five books between June 2 and August 15 will receive one free youth ticket to a 2008-2009 Atlanta Hawks basketball game and one free youth ticket to a 2008-2009 Atlanta Thrashers hockey game.

• Greer named Jack Mangham Award winner

Clayton State University student Marcia Greer, of Brooks, Ga., and two other students have been chosen to receive the 2007-2008 Jack Mangham Experiential Learning Student of the Year Award, sponsored by Georgia Association of Colleges and Employers (GACE). This annual statewide award recognizes those students who exemplify outstanding characteristics in work ethics, academic performance and citizenship. Judges review the nomination form submitted by a GACE member, student transcript, student essay and experiential learning supervisor evaluation. The award is given to students in competition from colleges and universities across the state in the following categories: business, education, arts and sciences and engineering/technology. Greer won the award for business. Greer has been involved in the Clayton State Chapter of the Society for Advancement of Management, where she has been active in coordinating programs to help students learn about the world of work. She interned at Cooper Wiring Devices in Peachtree City.

Team 8A at Booth Middle School collected $400 for Honor Flight Fayette, to send a World War II Veteran to Washington D.C. Last week veterans were taken to visit the memorial built in their honor in the nation’s capitol. The father and uncles of history teacher Salli Rees fought in the war, so the team found it appropriate to honor these brave men.

Young Chefs Academy in Peachtree City has announced their Camp Can-I-Cook "Cook for the Gold" summer camp series. As the world’s greatest athletes assemble this summer in Beijing, China for the Olympics, area kids will gather in the kitchens at Young Chefs Academy to cook-up some Olympic-sized fun.
