The Fayette Senior Services celebrated 30 years in existence by holding a Bluegrass Barbeque at its facility. Nearly 200 persons came to enjoy music, a barbecue supper cooked by a chef and a lot good fellowship.

Built last year, it opened the current facility six months ago. It is located on the same property as the Fayette Justice Center.

The house they have been in for nearly 29 years is known as the Roy Harrell House and is located behind Melear’s Restaurant. Its first six months were at the Fayette Presbyterian Church. Andy Carden has served as its director until last fall.

There was only so much space available in it and membership growth was at a standstill.

Donations and hard work by many volunteers raised $1.5 million in cash and in-kind services, and the Fayette County government provided the $2.5 million to complete the facility.

It is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A number of services are available such as Meals on Wheels, Adult Day Services, a Computer Lab., and a Fitness Center, which is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Membership is available at $20 per year. The membership has grown from 38 at the old house to over 600 members to-date at the new facility.

“What a thrill,” said Debbie Britt, executive director, “to be celebrating our 30th anniversary. It began as a modest, but significant advocacy for Fayette County seniors. With the help of a great community, the agency has been transformed into a vibrant organization poised to meet the rapidly growing demand for aging services.”

It is a 501(c)3 organization.
