Newnan resident Elizabeth Byrne was honored as the New Neighbor League Club’s May New Neighbor of the Month. Byrne has held several positions within the club in the past two years, serving as treasurer, chair of subscriptions and mailings, and ways and means. She was co-chair of luncheons and twice served as socials assistant.

The Atlanta Business Chronicle named Southwest Christian Care, located in Union City, as one of three finalists for TechBridge’s Technology Innovation Award. TechBridge’s Technology Innovation Award is presented to the nonprofit that demonstrates the most effective and innovative use of technology in one or more of the following areas: advancing its mission, increasing the efficiency of its day-to-day operations, improving its effectiveness in serving clients and key stakeholders, and increasing its fundraising, advocacy or volunteer efforts.

New Neighbors name Rosebud recipients

The Peachtree City Chapter of New Neighbors League Club (NNLC) awarded Elizabeth Byrne, Dolly Wyatt and Rose Barras the Rosebud award for March. April’s Rosebud recipient is Denise Henry. The award honors members who have shown remarkable initiative, cooperation and dedication to the club. These women have been very active in the club in such areas as crafts, socials and more. They have headed committees and planned events for the club. NNLC is a not-for-profit social organization with a monthly meeting and a wide variety of special interest groups. Local dancers accepted into competitive summer program

Classical Dance Theatre dancers, Sarah Olson, 15, and Nani Yim, 12, will be travelling to Orlando, Fla. to train intensively this summer with the Orlando Ballet School. The Orlando Ballet School has been voted the "Best School" at the New York Finals of the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP). Olson and Yim had to audition to be accepted into this highly competitive program. Only dancers with an intermediate or advanced dance background are accepted into Orlando Ballet's summer program.

Local office receives national award

Linda Connelly, Special Assistant to the Fair Housing Equal Opportunity Regional Director, presented the Peachtree City office of New South Federal with the 2007 Fair Lending Leader Award. Joy Millard, Peachtree City area manager, accepted the award. The luncheon was held April 9 at Flat Creek Country Club. Special guest speakers included David Larson, president and CEO of New South Federal, New South Federal Chairman of the Board Will Ratliff and Connelly.

Local group dedicates grave markers

The Frankie Lyle Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Texas Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy held a ceremony dedicating the grave markers honoring the memory of 11 soldiers of the 10th Regiment, Texas Infantry on Saturday, April 5 at the Patrick R. Cleburne Confederate Cemetery in Jonesboro. Ga. Bettye Baty placed the Texas Division wreath while a descendant of one of the Texas soldiers placed Texas soil and a Texas flag in front of the grave markers. Daughters from the Frankie Lyle Chapter placed a yellow rose on each Texas soldier’s grave.

Becky West wins state DAR award

Rebecca “Becky” M. West, of Fayetteville, Ga., has been named Outstanding Chapter Regent at the recent state conference of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in Athens.

West received a certificate and pin to add to the numerous others she has already earned. She said, “It is the smallest pin on the DAR ribbon, but, it is the biggest job in this organization you’ll ever undertake at the local level.”

They may be young, but siblings Tess and Tylen Janisch aren’t waiting to make a difference in the world. Tess is 5 years old and a preschooler at First Presbyterian.

Kids wanted for mural

This weekend’s art show has a little something extra for the younger set. This year, organizers are seeking children to help complete a mural that will be hanging at the annual Old Courthouse Art Show in Fayetteville. Each participant will get an "I helped paint the Courthouse House mural" ribbon or medal after helping color in the mural, which will hang in the Fayette County School System tent throughout the weekend. • Jackson named to dean's list
Jenna L. Jackson, of Fayetteville, Ga., has been named to the dean's list at Mercer University in Macon for the 2007 fall semester. She was invited to join Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society which is the oldest and largest honor society for first-year college students. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale during their first year. Members are also eligible for scholarships and awards awarded through the national scholarship committee. Jackson is a 2007 graduate of Sandy Creek High School.

The winner this year in the 55 and over age category is Barbara Carden, 70, of Brooks. Mrs. Carden was nominated by her six children, who shout her praises from A-Z. We noted that four of those children were born in six years and then a set of twins came along eight years later.

Girl Scout members from Troops 189, 225, 276 and 455, of service unit 616, met with Fayetteville Mayor Kenneth Steele to present a proclamation recognizing April 22 as Earth Day. Girl Scout service unit 616 hosted this year’s Fayette County Earth Day event on April 12. The day started with community clean-up projects at county parks and schools and moved to a “green theme” fair with more than 35 exhibitors.
