Sniffles: "The Black Gash of Shame" 25 years later

Sniffles's picture

25 years ago yesterday, November 11, 1982, the Vietnam Wall opened on the Mall in Washington D.C.

I remember the furor that arose when Maya Lin's design was selected back in 1981. Conservative groups were outraged, calling her masterpiece "the black ditch" and "the black gash of shame"...and those were just the names that could be printed in a family newspaper.

Jones: Councilman Harman has a very flawed character

For sure, everyone was right on Mike Harman. The guy was lying through his teeth.

Steve Brown hit the bullseye in his column:

Nitpickers: Blacktop dumping?

Peachtree Parkway looks like a tar and gravel dumping ground at the edges, from one end to the other!
I suppose they think they are preventing erosion but that doesn't work. Weeds grow through it and it crumbles since there is no base.

Spear Road Guy: Harman To Prove He's As Big A Liar As Logsdon On Kohl's

Spear Road Guy's picture

I think you've got to have Logsdon - Boone -and HARMAN for the Kohl's to pass.

Now didn't pious Harman declare his sainthood during the campaign? Didn't he tell everyone he opposed the land swamp and the Kohl's because it wasn't the right thing to do?

mapleleaf: GREATEST tax plan unveiled by newly announced candidate Mapleleaf

mapleleaf's picture

In a bold move never before seen in Georgia politics, Mapleleaf today announced her candidacy for the state House post held by the late Dan Lakly with a presentation of her GREATEST plan for Georgia.

teetaw: We're going to be alright everyone! GOD is going to give us rain!! THANK YOU JESUS!

It's no matter that we've sorely mismanaged our water supply already, lets just leave it up to God to sort out our situation!

Nitpickers: State driver's licenses?

We screw around for scores of years and deliberately let millions of illegals into the United States, and now we start nitpicking! How about that, a pun!

skyspy: What are You Thankful For?

It's that time of year again, what are you thankful for?

Big thanks to all of our service men and women. We can't thank you enough.

d.smith700: Banks and Sub-prime (crooked) loans

It seems that many of our citizens do not fully understand the sub-prime loan market. It is similar to the title loan and short-term military robberies businesses, run by very wealthy people to get more wealthy!

d.smith700: Close enough for government work!

Lets make up some numbers that should be close enough to use as extrapalations of what will happen in a couple of more generations--maybe 3-4 generations.

GA Red Bug: FCHS Tigers: Play Off Draw Bad as it Gets?

The fates, and whomever in charge of setting up play off brackets and Region teams, seem to have conspired to test FCHS Tigers to the limit.

tennfan1: Problems

It would seem to me that we here in Fayette County do have our share of issues and problems. But, it is also apparent that little is ever done about these issues and problems until they reach a bursting point. So often we can point out what others are doing wrong but rarely can we bring ourselves to do anything about it. It's a contagious syndrome that affects every one of us on a certain level. We all see problems, but we assume that someone else will take care of it. We subconsciously hope, often erroneously, that we will not be forced to deal with the problems before us. If everyone were to "step up to the plate", as the saying goes, every time they saw a problem, I would guess that bursting issues would be few and far between, a welcome thought in our "knee-jerk reflex" world.

bad_ptc: KOHL'S is on the PTC agenda for NOV. 15th! This developer has to be stopped!

The Best of PTC: Git Real...take a breath

The Best of PTC's picture

Git real-PTC is a wonderful community that I have had the pleasure of living in for twelve years. I want PTC to remain a great community, as all other residents.

d.smith700: Televangelists

I saw a list of 90 televangelists on Wikipedia!
A few are dead and a few new ones have not made it yet.
I recall the Catholic priests of the 50s and 60s with their very quiet and studious sermons, and mostly I remember the radio shouters and thumpers and the people who said three words, then UUUHHHH.

Nitpickers: Bus seat belts!

We seem to have lost all thinkers in the USA! Simply no imagination or actual experience in much of anything.
Now, I have ridden a few buses in my time for company outings and even cross country in the old days, and the kind of things that occur there don't cogitate with seat belts!

Nitpickers: Exodus

It seems the annual exodus of Mexicans from the USA has increased somewhat this fall. They usually either go home (don't get caught going back through the fence either)or maybe to Canada where they are housed and fed through the winter.

caring citizen: Ramsey a concerned citizen who loves Fayette County

Git Real seems to be such an angry person! Have you ever met Matt Ramsey personally?

The Matt Ramsey I know is a dedicated and caring family man with a lovely wife and 2 very special children. He grew up in Fayette county and LOVES his community. I think he'll do an outstanding job of representing us and I plan to give him my full support.

Cyclist: Never forget, as we owe so much to them!!! Nov. 11

Cyclist's picture

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

3071

Whereas it has long been our customs to commemorate November 11, the anniversary of the ending of World War I, by paying tribute to the heroes of that tragic struggle and by rededicating ourselves to the cause of peace; and Whereas in the intervening years, the United States has been involved in two other great military conflicts, which have added millions of veterans living and dead to the honor rolls of this Nation; and

Mike King: STILL NOT GETTING IT

Mike King's picture

Last evening I was taken aback by the mayor's article in the Peachtree City Newsletter regarding what he believes to be the eventuality of a big box such as Kohls. With three of four residents standing firmly against them, I must reiterate what I said in an earlier article: "Mr Mayor, are you listening?"

tennfan1: One more question

Just one more question: How did The Citizen get access to this person's Myspace page? Do they know someone who does? Do they have some sort of connection with someone who can access any of the pages?

tennfan1: What's with this?

It seems to me that there is a rash of rumors breaking out all over the school system regarding violence. I don't know what to make of it all, but it's personally troubling to me.

d.smith700: US Consumer Protection Agency

It is becoming even difficult for me to believe that so many forms of our government have been practically destroyed by this current administration in just two terms.

Kevin Wandra: Sports websites

Kevin Wandra's picture

Most people I meet figure I read about sports quite often. Yes, that’s true. I spend an inordinate amount of time on the Internet reading about sports, especially the NFL. I thought I would share with you my favorite sports websites.

Vern: VanGogh continues to bring up great points as listed below.

The end

Nitpickers: NO INFLATION THEY SAY

Not if you don't count oil (half of our stuff made from oil), Gold (used in many products), corn (our staple), copper (used everywhere).

thebeaver: Government: If It Ain't Broke, They'll Break It

Great article by Larry Elder on government inefficiency and incompetence...

Government: If It Ain't Broke, They'll Break It

VanGogh: OWN UP DIAL!

we are waitin' - we know the truth now if only u could tell it!!

sickandtired: OMG....CAN SOMEONE PLEASE

Call the WAAAAAHHHHHHHambulance for the tyrone winebags. I think they are not feeling well. I'm really afraid one of them is going to have a nervous breakdown worrying about an Election that is OVER.
