Tyrone Town Council was split 2-2 Thursday night on a decision to endorse Fayette County’s Land Use Study for the Ga. Highway 74 North Corridor. Fayette County Planning & Zoning Director Pete Frisina will return for the March 5 council meeting when all members are expected to be present.

Tyrone Planning Commission Thursday voted unanimously to recommend a plan proposed by Fayette County that would create two new business districts along Ga. Highway 74 North from Sandy Creek Road to the Fulton County line. The study that includes property situated both in the town and county will go to the town council next week.

Tyrone’s Triangle Park on Senoia Road got a name change Thursday and will soon begin to transform into a memorial to honor veterans.  Council members Feb. 5 also approved the use of drug seizure money secured by the town’s participation in the sheriff’s Tactical Narcotics Team to fund needed repairs and remodeling to the police department basement.

A complaint filed last summer by Tyrone resident Dick Shelley over alleged malfeasance by former town administrative staff and investigated by Tyrone Police has been forwarded to Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) by District Attorney Scott Ballard. GBI is completing its investigation and is expected to return the results to Ballard in the near future.

State Senator Ronnie Chance (R-Tyrone) has been appointed Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee by Lt. Governor Casey Cagle for the 2009-10 session of the Georgia General Assembly.

It is a work in progress. And the discussion and deliberation by Tyrone Planning Commission at the work session Thursday to continue efforts on the town’s Revised Sign Ordinance and Traditional Residential Zoning District moved closer to completion. They will likely be considered in regular session in coming weeks.

Tyrone auditor Dan Post last week gave town council members a brief overview of the annual audit for the period ending June 30, 2008. The poor state of the economy notwithstanding, the audit showed a deficit of $133,544 for the fiscal year in expenses over revenues.

Tyrone Town Council decided Dec. 18 it was time to advertise for a full-time finance director. The 3-1 vote came after a recommendation from town auditor Dan Post to hire someone to fill the position permanently. Former Planning Commission member Mary Sturm had been serving in a temporary finance/human resources capacity since the summer.

Tyrone Police again this year made a difference at Christmas for youngsters and their families. The department raised more than $8,000 and treated 12 children to a shopping spree at Wal-mart and Target in Peachtree City.

It came down to a tie-breaker recently as Tyrone council members voted 3-2 to have the library open again on Mondays beginning Jan. 5. The library had ceased operating on Mondays earlier this year due to town budget issues. The new library opened in January 2008.

Tyrone Town Council granted a special exception request Thursday from Crossroads Christian School to allow the continued operation of the school at First Baptist Church of Tyrone. And like Tyrone Planning Commission an hour earlier, the council required that the current student/teacher population of 69 individuals be the maximum number allowed unless upgrades are made to the septic system.

The economy may be slumping, but apparently not in terms of child care needs in the Tyrone area. That was the point Thursday as Planning Commission members voted unanimously on a site plan to build Discovery Point Day Care on Carriage Oaks Drive behind CVS Pharmacy.

Tyrone council members may have moved a step closer to determining the fate of next year’s Founders Day celebration. In discussions Thursday, the council heard a suggestion from Founders Day co-organizer and Tyrone Depot owner Chip Young that the town consider making the event a non-profit corporation. The honors flowed Wednesday night at Tyrone Depot as the town’s police officers were joined by Sheriff Randall Johnson for the annual awards dinner recognizing the year’s achievements.

Tyrone Town Council adopted an amended Community Sewer Ordinance Thursday night followed by a decision to ask Fayette County Water System Director Tony Parrott to meet with council members at an upcoming meeting. The ordinance prohibits the installation of private community sewer systems.

A daytime burglary Oct. 28 at a Foxford Run residence in Tyrone resulted in the theft of a large flat screen television and a laptop computer. Police advise residents to be aware of their surroundings and report unusual activity in neighborhoods.

What began two years ago for Nancy Goedker as a move from Strafford, New Hampshire to work with the ministries of Operation Mobilization in Tyrone ended in mid-October with former U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant being hired as the new town clerk.

The town of Tyrone says it is set to eliminate the mold found in the basement of the Police Department. Cracks in the outer wall on the building’s south side allowed moisture to enter and mold to form.

The portion of Georgia highway 314 from the Fulton County line to its junction with Georgia highway 85 in Fayetteville has been designated the “General William Livsey Highway” in honor of the four-star general who has resided in Fayetteville since his retirement from active duty in 1987.

Tyrone’s Planning Commission made a move Thursday to potentially adjust three overlapping development district boundaries currently on the books. The outcome of the Oct. 9 work session was designed to solve the issue of the overlapping boundaries of the Main Street District and Traditional Residential area included in the town’s Comprehensive Plan and the Town Center District included in the zoning ordinance. Currently under consideration is a proposal to do away with the Main Street District by wrapping it into and expanding the Town Center District while squaring off and expanding the Traditional Residential area.

A Tyrone man was injured Thursday afternoon in a traffic accident at Ga. Highway 74 and Ga. Highway 54. The man was life-flighted to Atlanta Medical Center with unknown injuries.

Crystal methamphetamine found in vehicle compartment

A quick-thinking Fayette County deputy sheriff is being credited for intercepting 100 pounds of crystal methamphetamine in Tyrone early Wednesday evening.

Aside from the cool glasses worn by one energetic attendee, the hundreds of people, maybe a thousand or more, found the annual Tyrone Founders Day Parade a joy to behold.
