Tyrone decides to hire finance director

Tyrone Town Council decided Dec. 18 it was time to advertise for a full-time finance director. The 3-1 vote came after a recommendation from town auditor Dan Post to hire someone to fill the position permanently. Former Planning Commission member Mary Sturm had been serving in a temporary finance/human resources capacity since the summer.

Attending the council meeting to report on the recently completed audit, Post was asked to give his opinion on future staffing requirements relating to town finances. He recommended the hiring of either a part-time or full-time finance director.

“The town is a $5.7-6 million company. That size company usually has a finance director,” Post said. “I believe you need that person. The most important decisions in the next couple of years will be financial.”

Asked by Councilwoman Grace Caldwell if someone in a permanent position would stay busy, Post said a finance director could assist Town Administrator Chris Venice and, over time, the position would pay for itself.

Councilman Tracy Young said he believed the position should be advertised and listed as a full-time job. Young put his opinion in the form of a motion that passed 3-1. Caldwell was opposed.

Oh yeah dont tell me about the libary and the park, as well as the fire dept and ems, thats all county...Can you say EBAY...no reserve...As the donkey brays.....

Hey Mysteryman, you know why don’t you? There’s a lot of money missing from the bank account. In 2007 alone over $36,000 was missing. Mary Sturm brought it out at the 6-10-08 Council meeting.

The Auditor Dan Post said the position would pay for itself. Apparently they have found out that more money is missing than the cost of a yearly salary for a Finance Director.

The Fayette District Attorney has the reports of a four month financial investigation. I’m betting you that the reports will be quashed, and the citizens will never know the total of missing public funds. The investigator was supposed to have gone back to 1997, and included the employee payment plan and bidding process.

How things get swept under the rug, when any other time this would have been headline news, only in Fayette county, wake up folks everyone needs to be at the next council meeting to demand action, how long will these clowns be allowed to walk. Someone should have already been locked up for this indiscretion a long time ago, for there has been an apparent theft by taking, anyhow if it was me or you we would have already been under arrest...PEACE...

There is a big cover-up going on in Tyrone, regarding either missing funds, misappropriated funds or missing funds not reflected in assets on the budget. The long time problem is the SECRECY. Citizens have a right to know what’s going on with their money, but anyone who asks is ignored.

An Austell city employee was arrested recently for altering records and embezzlement of money. Same thing in Fayette County and other governments. (AJC Page B-1 Jan. 19). We know beyond the shadow of a doubt, by admission and legal discovery that Tyrone’s records were altered. That’s a criminal offense. We also know money may have been misappropriated. If there’s really nothing wrong here, why won’t officials just tell the public; like this:

Dear Citizens of Tyrone,

Since my election there has been much speculation and suspicion about Tyrone’s public records and public funds by the citizens. During my first year in office, we hired Mary Sturm as a financial consultant to review the records. Mary reported to Council on June 10 that she found checks for $36,000 that were questionable. Clerk Valerie Caldwell stated that former Mayor Sheryl Lee authorized these checks. We immediately fired Ms. Caldwell with a vague public statement of “problems with her duties”. We then interviewed Ex Mayor Lee who said that she did authorize the checks. We also did a Forensic Audit and Police investigation and turned the report over to the District Attorney last November.

Although we found that your public records were in shambles, cash receipts were undeterminable, the employee payment plan was not followed as to vacation pay and comp time payments and some other things I don’t want to mention to you now; I wish to report that everything was found to be in order and no criminal offenses have taken place.

Your Mayor,
Don Rehwaldt

Assumed Annual Report of Tyrone Councilwoman Grace Caldwell.

If she were to give one.

Dear Tyrone Citizens,

2008 has been an eventful year. I told everyone in 2007 that if we could elect a majority council that thought like me and Gloria Furr, that we could straighten out Tyrone’s problems. I was wrong, the three new men still are discriminating against women. We have discovered many altered records and missing funds. I know this is a criminal offense but I can’t get any support from the men to do anything. I know the law says the State Attorney General is required to do an investigation if any town official asks for one, but I just don’t want to do that. I’d really like for the citizens to do my job for me. Anyway, it’s not my job to protect the citizens, lets just pay the lawyers to do that.

There is one thing that bothers me. I was notified that three dvd tapes of public meetings were altered and asked to look into it, which I didn’t. If I have to testify under oath in court about this, I just don’t know what to say. My bark is much louder than my bite and this makes a lot of people think I’m doing something when I’m not. The reason is, I’m deathly afraid of being sued personally so I don’t want to actually do anything about anything. I never stopped to think that truth is the perfect defense. And God knows, I know a hell of a lot of truth about things in Tyrone. I took an oath to uphold the law. Does swearing an oath mean anything anymore? Well, none of the other officials pay any attention to oaths, so I guess I won’t either. That’s my state of Tyrone address for 2008. I really do want to bring out all the truth and actually do something about it. Maybe I can gain some courage in 2009.

Your Councilwoman,
Grace Caldwell

Assumed Annual Report of Tyrone Councilman Tracy Young

If he were to give one.

Dear Tyrone Citizens,

After my first year in office I wish to give my annual state of the town address. Basically, I’m very happy with my work in 2008. You all will remember that I promised to repeal the bad zoning ordinance, an issue that by my own words got me elected. I even sent a thank you card to one of my supporters. However, early on, I decided to vote against any change to the ordinance, stating publicly that “I just want to be fair to everyone”. Whatever the hell that means, I’ll leave to your imagination. Although you don’t know it, I voted in secret executive session to continue to fight any lawsuit against this ordinance. I can’t tell you why I changed my mind so quickly because I’ve never read the ordinance. Even if I decided to read it, I’m not sure which ordinance to read. The town has certified two conflicting zoning ordinances, which we use and sell to the public depending on which way we want to go. I’m not sure which ordinance the Planning Commission uses when making recommendations to the Council. And frankly, I don’t care. Property rights of business owners is no longer on my agenda. Not withstanding my other campaign promise to talk to all the business owners about their zoning problems, I do not intent to do that now that I’m in office. Hopefully, all of my broken promises will be forgotten if I decide to run for office again. Anyhow, I’ve got three more years on Council and my supporters can’t take that away from me. That’s my annual report to all you fools who voted for me.

Your Tyrone Councilman,
Tracy Young.

Assumed Annual Report of Tyrone Councilman Eric Dial

If he were to give one.

Dear Tyrone Citizens,

I would like to report to you that I have really enjoyed my first year in office. So many awful things have been uncovered that I just don’t even want to talk about them. I would rather report on my work on ball fields. The parents of children who participate in athletics and schools is my main concern. If any other important business, such as property rights comes before council, I prefer to take the middle of the road approach and recuse myself from voting. That way no one can say I was for or against anything. Although my job is working for an organization whose sole reason for existence is to protect the constitutionality of property rights, they told me to recuse myself for fear of election conflicts. I think the real conflict is with my duties as a councilman to protect property rights. I know, like Tracy Young, I campaigned on looking into the zoning ordinance regarding adverse condemnation, which I said some council members didn’t even know what it meant. But I fully understand the law on this. After all my organization is nothing but lawyers who have been involved in some of the biggest Supreme Court cases in the defense of property rights. I know that adverse condemnation is when a government passes a law that takes away existing property rights and doesn’t pay the property owner for the loss. I knew Tyrone did this to all businesses even before I announced my candidacy. Don’t ask me why, I’m now defending the governments actions. It’s none of your business. I did ask the council to adopt the State Ethics Law, but none of them wanted any ethics. So, much to the citizens dismay, I never brought it up again. I’m just not interested in right v. wrong anymore. What bothers me most is, that my job with the organization for the protection of property rights is to get people to donate their hard earned money for something I really don’t care about in my own home town. That’s the most honest report I can give you.

Your Tyrone Councilman,
Eric Dial
