Fayette Daybreak Rotary honors Tyrone Teachers of the Year

The Fayette Daybreak Rotary Club had the privilege of honoring the Tyrone Teachers of the Year during a ceremony at the club’s regular Thursday morning meeting on Feb. 7. This distinction has special meaning as it was bestowed upon the teachers by their fellow teachers in each school.

Special Olympics fundraiser in Tyrone

Partner’s Pizza in Tyrone will donate a portion of the proceeds for Monday, March 24, from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m., to the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics.

Tyrone planning discusses J93.3

An attempt to re-locate J93.3 from Ga. Highway 54 just outside Peachtree City to Tyrone continued on that path with Tyrone Planning Commission stating support for the idea at its March 13 work session. Commissioners considered reviewing the current table of uses for the C-2 zoning district with the potential for having a “radio studio” included. The issue will be discussed at a March 27 public hearing.

Dick Shelley wants text amendment to C-2 zoning district

Dick Shelley is still looking for the reversal of an ordinance he claims has excluded nearly all the uses of his business rental property at 117-119 Tyrone Road. Shelley’s request was heard at Tyrone Planning Commission’s March 13 work session. The request asks for the re-instatement of 14 permitted uses in the C-2 zoning district that were excluded by the adoption of Ordinance 454 in 2004.

Tyrone police unveil community alert system

Tyrone Police Department has unveiled a new electronic community alert system, the Town Crier. Chief Brandon Perkins said the alert system is in an effort to provide timely information to its citizens. A recent announcement of the system has already resulted in 41 people signing up for the service.

Tyrone egg hunt and festivities

There will be a bit of Easter and “A Taste of Tyrone” and a host of other activites all coinciding on St. Patrick’s Day that will all take place in Tyrone Saturday morning beginning at 10 a.m.

Town attorney Dennis Davenport told the Tyrone Town Council that the recent changes to the charter were not exactly sailing through the General Assembly.

OLOV science olympiad winners

Congratulations to Our Lady of Victory’s Science Olympiad team. After placing 5th in the overall, Division B (Grades 6-9) competition recently held at Gordon College, OLV students qualified for the state Tournament to be held at Augusta State University on March 29th.

Some damage done during Tyrone petty cash burglaries

Two recent break-ins in Tyrone resulted in the theft of petty cash and some property damage.

The first burglary, at AAA Machinery Moving on Peachtree Court, occurred between late night hours Feb. 26 and early morning hours the following day, according to Tyrone Police spokesperson Alicia Batts.

Bibletones in concert

First Baptist Tyrone has special guests in concert this Sunday, March 9.

The BibleTones, a gospel music quartet with over 40 years’ experience, will be performing at the 10:45 worship service. The community is welcome.

New mayor and council meet for first tyrone retreat

It was the first retreat for Tyrone’s new mayor and council. The Feb. 23 council retreat saw discussions on issues such as the possibility of a new meeting schedule, local option sales tax revenues, town employee positions and a move toward certification by the police department.

Tyrone planning looks at O'Reilly and Hanson

O’Reilly Auto Parts moved a step closer to constructing a store on Tyrone Road on property adjacent to the BP station on Ga. Highway 74. Tyrone Planning Commission Feb. 28 voted unanimously to recommend approval of the site plan for the project.

Tyrone church to walk for little girl

Living Proof Church is helping sponsor a 2-Mile Benefit Walk for Jessica McElveen March 8, 2008. Jessica is the 13 year old girl we having been praying for for several weeks, and she is a next neighbor of the Minot’s, and school class mate of several of our teens. Jessica has a very, very type of cancer (there are less than 12 known cases in the U.S.).

Tyrone council retreat-ethics

It was a different kind of town business at the Tyrone Council retreat Feb. 23. Council member Eric Dial recommended at the town consider adopting an ethics resolution and an accompanying ordinance. After some discussion, the council agreed to look at Dial’s proposal.

Tyrone burglary suspect arrested

It took a little time but Tyrone Police got their man. Deshawn Davis, 20, of an unknown address, was charged Feb. 11 in the Sept. 16 burglary of the Shell convenience store on Senoia Road, according to Tyrone Police spokesperson Alicia Batts.

F'ville's Mayor Steele named GMA 3rd VP

Fayetteville Mayor Kenneth Steele was elected Georgia Municipal Association’s (GMA) Third Vice President during the association's recent annual meeting in Savannah. GMA Executive Director Jim Higdon said Steele possesses clear leadership qualities that will take him further with the organization.

Tyrone finally has a new Planning Commission.

After skipping January because it did not have enough members, the Tyrone Town Council Thursday night appointed a virtually new board.

Southampton Residents form Neighborhood Watch

Homeowners from the Southampton Community gathered in the neighborhood clubhouse Jan. 31 to discuss crime in their area and to form a neighborhood watch program. The residents are taking a proactive approach to ensure that the neighborhood remains safe and that their property values remain high. Chief Brandon Perkins was on hand to explain how neighborhood watch works and to provide the residents with crime information from the neighborhood and the Town in general.

Sen. Chance to carry Governor's ID theft legislation creating a GBI task force

State Sen. Ronnie Chance (R-Tyrone) has introduced Governor Sonny Perdue's legislation to establish an identity theft task force within the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). Earlier this year, Gov. Perdue included $1 million in his budget proposal to fund the task force, which will combat identity theft on several fronts, including investigating alleged identity theft, educating the public, supporting victims and training local law enforcement in combating identity theft.

Rotary Honors Tyrone Police Officer of the Year

The Fayette Daybreak Rotary Club had the privilege of honoring Officer Shawn Albe, the 2007 Tyrone Police Officer of The Year during a ceremony at the clubs regular Thursday morning meeting on January 24. This distinction has special meaning as it was bestowed upon Officer Albe by a vote of his peers in the police force. Tyrone Police Chief Brandon Perkins praised Officer Albe as "a man who loves his job, the citizens he protects, and his community" as well as a manager's dream employee. This honor is especially significant as Officer Albe only recently joined the Tyrone police force in May of 2007. Prior to this he worked for the Fayette County Marshall's office for three years.

Sandy Creek Math Team

The Sandy Creek Varsity Math Team should be congratulated on their recent win. On January 23, 2008, the Sandy Creek Math Team had the opportunity to participate in the Regional Tournament sponsored by Griffin RESA.
