J93.3 wants to move to Tyrone

The county's only radio station could soon be moving to Tyrone.

During Thursday night’s Town Council meeting, Tyrone’s leaders heard a presentation from Wayne Wilkins, who owns the Legacy Theatre building.

“It’s actually a radio studio, instead of a transmitting station,” said Wilkins.

The studio actually transmits from a location in Meriwether County, so there will be no towers attached to the location. The station is currently in the Publix shopping center in on Ga. Highway 54, just outside the city limits of Peachtree City.

“There’s about 15-full-time employees and 12-15 part-time employees,” Wilkins said.

Station manager Rick Davidson explained the station was Christian, and offered a positive alternative to much of pop culture.

“I support this, and we’re going to try to make this work,” said Councilman Eric Dial.

The problem is the Legacy Theatre lies in a C-2 zoning area, which does not allow for a radio station. But Mayor Don Rehwaldt suggested the matter head to the Planning Commission Feb.28 for a full discussion.

Davidson said the station would like to move in by July, and Rehwaldt said a decision should be reached by the Town Council in April.

[NOTE: most of what follows is an educated guess]

They'll have a bit more space than they have at PTC. Also, when they moved to PTC it was an up-and-coming town. Now that it's fairly large, it's lost that feel.

Plus, a lot of the workers live in Coweta/North Fayette/Fayetteville and it would be a better "middle ground"

They should have fixed Shamrock first.

How do you know most live in Coweta/North Fayette/Fayetteville? It's lost that feel? I don't understand.

Why do they need more space? PTC is a great town, looks like they would want to stay there, especially since they have grown and they have more public view, don't get me wrong Tryone is great- I just don't know why the move.

Through listening to the DJs on the radio and reading bios, "most" of them don't live in PTC. For me, PTC has become more of an upscale town. when J933 first got there, it wasn't as well known as it is today. Again, these are my opinions.

Right now, they're cramped in a little space in the Publix shopping center on 54.

If they move to the Legacy, they'll have more room (depending on which building they'll be located in.

From an employee that answered an e-mail I sent:
"The relocation is something we are considering. It would facilitate artist visits and allow us to lower our operational costs."
