Farmer’s Market set to open

The City of Fairburn is pleased to announce the Fairburn Farmer’s Market will again be a weekly event in historic downtown Fairburn beginning Saturday May 6 and running through Saturday, Oct. 28 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. The market will be held at the Freight Depot located at West Broad Street and U.S. Highway 29, one-half block from the intersection of Hwy. 29 and Hwy. 92.

Palmetto-free trash pick-up

The City of Palmetto will provide free trash pick-up of limbs, leaves and yard debris April 17-28. For one free pick-up per household please contact city hall at (770) 463-3377.

Accreditation Assessment Team invites public comment

On April 23, 2006 the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) will begin examining all aspects of the Fulton County Marshal’s Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations and support services. This process is taking place so that the Fulton County Marshal’s Department will receive its reaccreditation.

On April 24, 2006, the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) will begin examining all aspects of the Fulton County Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations and support services. This process is taking place so that the Fulton County Police Department will receive its reaccreditation.

Palmetto checks hydrants

Palmetto Fire Department will flush and inspect all city fire hydrants beginning April 10 through April 21.

Planners OK office space on Jenkins Road

A motion to rezone an eight-acre tract on Jenkins Road passed March 30 at the Tyrone Planning commission on a 3-0 vote. The recommendation to designate the property from AR (Agricultural Residential) to OI (Office institutional) came after presentations at several commission meetings.

Not-so-dirty movies?

Things are looking up at Tinseltown Movie Theatre in Fayetteville. A third follow-up food service inspection by Fayette Health Department April 4 noted a significantly better score than the two previous inspections. The Fayette Pavilion theater received a score of 83 during the April 4 visit, a far cry from the 54 on March 29 and the 50 scored on March 23.

PTC library surveys available

The Peachtree City Library is seeking patrons’ input in a survey to help update its new master plan.

Today, the library is hosting a patron appreciation day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., where refreshments will be served in an effort to encourage patrons to fill out the survey.

Chance announces re-election bid for Senate

State Sen. Ronnie Chance, R-Tyrone, has announced he will run for re-election to his current seat.

Chance sponsored a successful bill that, if signed by Gov. Sonny Perdue, will require local school systems to spend a minimum of 65 percent of their total operating expenditures on direct classroom funding. School systems could apply to the State Board of Education for a one-year waiver to this rule, and any sanctions for violating the rule are left to the discretion of the Georgia Board of Education.

The National Heights Baptist Church Sanctuary Choir and Friends will present the Passion and Easter portion of Handel’s Messiah Sunday at 6 p.m.

Flight Training

Falcon Aviation Academy, the metro area’s premier provider of professional pilot training programs, will be offering future aviators ages 14-18 the opportunity to get hands-on experience with both ground training and flight training in a series of summer flight programs at the school’s Falcon Field facilities in Peachtree City. The programs will help teens explore the world of aviation and encourage them to consider careers in the aviation industry.

Lewis and Clark exhibition opens in Newnan

The Newnan-Coweta Historical Society announced today that a portion of the early American West will be traveling east in April when the Society hosts the traveling exhibit “Documenting the Corps of Discovery.” This exhibit features an extraordinary collection of primary documents, interpretative resources, art, and artifacts that provide a wealth of information about the Lewis and Clark expedition.

1-month delay expected on widening of Hwy. 54-34

Hwy. 34 won’t be done until August

It’s going to take the contractor a little longer — at least a month — than initially planned to complete the widening of Ga. highways 54 and 34 from Peachtree City to Sharpsburg.

Wed. crash kills man

A Riverdale man was killed early this morning in an auto crash on Banks Road near Vaughn Road, police said.

Mack S. Edwards, 42, was driving his 1996 Nissan truck west on Banks Road when the collision occurred, police said. His truck was struck when a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Mikaela L. Figel, 20, of Peachtree City crossed the center line of the road.

County wins order against sheriff

Fayette County officials got approval for a temporary protective order against Sheriff Randall Johnson that would forbid him from “misuse of his police powers.”

PTC may scrap industrial park road realignment

Peachtree City’s engineer is recommending that the city scrap a project to realign the intersection of Huddleston Road and Dividend Drive in the city’s industrial park because it would need “extensive” purchasing of right of way property.

Groups work together to help prevent child abuse

It’s child abuse. And it hurts.

Attempting to bring the destructive reality of child abuse and neglect into a greater public awareness, members of numerous public organizations and advocacy groups met Monday to kick off the start of Child Abuse Prevention Month. The meeting was followed by the group placing 157 pinwheels in front of the Dept. of Family and Children’s Services (DFACS) office on Ga. Highway 85 South in Fayetteville. Sadly, each pinwheel represents a substantiated case of child abuse or neglect that occurred in Fayette County during 2005. The number of referred cases totaled 558.

Planners OK medical complex

The Stone property on Ga. Highway 54 and Burch Road was on the Fayetteville Planning and Zoning agenda again March 28 along with elevation plans for renovations at the former Banks Crossing SteinMart. But as significant as any agenda item was the departure of Commissioner Jim Crain.

Animal shelter relocated

Fayette County has notified the City of Peachtree City of an upcoming renovation project at the Animal Shelter on Highway 74 South. The project, which began April 4, will require the temporary relocation of approximately 20 dogs to the old Fayette County Water System maintenance building on Kelly Drive.
