Local students put on show for Kiwanis talent awards

Lots of talent for Kiwanis contest

Audience members were treated to a variety of talents exhibited by Fayette County students at the recent finals of the 21st Annual Art and Talent Showcase sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Peachtree City.

Over $4,000 in cash prizes were presented to the first through fourth place finishers in each grade category. Winners were selected from over 120 art entries and 40 individual acts.

The first place winners were as follows:

Grades 1 and 2 Art: Jacob Harper, Oak Grove Elementary. Talent: Tyler Nigro, Home Schooled, Violin.

Grades 3 and 4 Art: Elizabeth Andrews, Oak Grove Elementary. Talent: Paige McCauley, St. Paul Lutheran, Vocal.

Grades 5 and 6 Art: Adam Van Dyke, Flat Rock Middle School. Talent: Robert Gould, St. Paul Lutheran, Vocal.

Grades 7, 8, 9 Art: Donna Huynh, Flat Rock Middle School. Talent: Alexander Smith, Home Schooled, Classical Guitar.

Grades 10, 11, 12 Art: Kristin Espia, McIntosh High School. Talent: Andrew Zheng, Starr’s Mill High School, Piano.

Mikael Jury, Sandy Creek High School, won first place in the 3-Dimensional Art Category. Winners for the Special Education Art Awards were Paige Wayton, Booth Middle School (Grades 1-8), and Christian Levasque, Whitewater High School (Grades 9-12).

Also recognized with a certificate and cash award were art teacher Jocelyn Rivard and Assistant Principal Nancy Blair, Flat Creek Middle School, for having their students submit the most art entries in the show.

According to Cliff Schmidt, Kiwanis event chairman, winners of the art and talent categories in grades 10-12 will advance to the Georgia Kiwanis state competition on April 29 in Carrollton. First prize for each winner is $3,500. – Reported by Dan Nelson, Kiwanis Club of Peachtree City.
