Tyrone gets $59K for drug work

Again, the Town of Tyrone’s participation on the Fayette County Drug Task Force has paid a big dividend.

Every so often, Tyrone and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department get checks from the federal government for taking part in large drug busts around the metro Atlanta area. This time, Tyrone’s share was for $59,000, which will pay for two new cars, said Police Chief Johnny Hay.

Tyrone provides one officer to the drug task force on a full-time basis. Other than the extra funds for law enforcement, the dividend reaped by Tyrone residents is the assistance in stopping large quantities of drugs before they can be sold in Fayette County.

The sheriff’s department provides six men to the task force, which works the larger busts in conjunction with the federal Drug Enforcement Agency. The task force also conducts local drug busts, largely through the use of undercover drug stings.

Hay said the Tyrone area is likely to see more significant drug activity coming through the area because of its position on a major highway.
