Athletic scholarships hinge on more than just ability

Thank you for the nice article by Ted Knapp. The process of recruiting is very difficult for a 17-year-old who has worked very hard for the past four years.

Who runs Fayette? Not county administrator

It is sad to say but Fayette County no longer has a county administrator. There is a person drawing a $112,000 salary who holds that position, but she is completely powerless.

Elections board member is not all that Hobbs is

I recently wrote to The Citizen about a recent Republican Candidate Forum involving the County Commission Post 1 race. I have three important points in a follow-up of that letter.

Wilkerson has ‘strong balanced commitment’

I want to encourage everyone to get out and vote on Tuesday, March 21. This is an important election. It could be a pivotal point in changing the future of our wonderful county.

Why Wilkerson is best choice for county comm.

The March 21 special election is just a little over a week away. This election is very special to Fayette County. Fayette County has an opportunity to elect a new type of county commissioner. Emory Wilkerson is the right choice.

Wynnmeade officer defends her subdivision

I would like to respond to all of the negative comments about Wynnmeade from the coward with the pen name “All Smiles” concerning the annexation of senior housing in the West Village. More than likely if you have lived in Peachtree City for as long as you say you have, you knew when you purchased your home that Wynnmeade existed as did many people that moved to this area from other places. That didn’t stop you, did it? Obviously the existence of Wynnmeade hasn’t harmed your property values.

Garlock no authority on who gets service medals

After reading Mr. Garlock’s article about John Kerry, I wondered if he would have written the same thing if Kerry was a Republican.

Garlock rebuttal: Compare military service of Bush, Kerry; it’s no contest

I disagree with Mr. Garlock’s assertion: “In 2004 the Swiftboat veterans made a mistake ... in starting their campaign going after the validity of Kerry’s medals.”

Can’t we at least agree: Stop partial-birth abortions?

In all of our recent exchanges over the issue of abortion, my interlocutors and I have overlooked one rather central point: the abortion process itself. Sometimes, in the abstract realm of theoretical and philosophical points and counterpoints, we forget what actually happens when a ”pregnancy is terminated.”

When life begins: The one who made us has an opinion

About the subject of when life begins and whether we can know that or not, I agree with the letter writer that this question is indeed far too complex and overreaching for you or I or even a Supreme Court justice to decide on.

Pilot bashing: Wife, Delta employee speaks up

Several of the recent Delta pilot-bashing “Free Speech” writers only confirmed what my husband and I already knew. Delta Airlines has been successful in at least ONE area: that of creating class warfare amongst its own employees.

Pilot offers some facts about Delta’s contract

There were several negative comments in the March 1 Citizen Free Speech section regarding the Delta pilots. First a quick math lesson for the author of the second pilot comment.

Wilkerson involved for years in bettering county

RE: Wilkerson was Republican before it was cool
Recently I was impressed by the letter from Richard Hobbs regarding the candidates for the special election on March 21 to fill the County Commission post left vacant by the passing of A.G. VanLandingham. This is an important election which has been given little attention.

Overturn Roe v. Wade and return the issue to states’ democratic process

First, I would like to say that contrary to “Name Withheld’s” assertion that I seek only to provoke, my true intention is to spark serious debate about an issue which has not been debated enough. I am gratified to see that the content and tone of most of the responses to my letter were serious, well-thought out, and civil. This is the kind of debate we must have on this issue, and one which was cut short for both sides by Roe v. Wade.

‘Walk in my shoes’ on abortion? 16 years ago, I did

I came upon the “abortion responses” articles in the opinion section of The Citizen and was immediately taken by a woman’s article, “... walk in my shoes” and my heart went out to the young woman 26 years ago that faced a painful decision at a mere 22 years old.

When does personhood begin? Answer determines all

In the abortion discussion there is only one question that really matters and it is a preeminent question that is almost never asked. Last week there were three letters basically defending the pro-choice position. These letters did not ask the question, as the question has nothing to do with the Constitution, a right to privacy, a right to choose, the Supreme Court, how a woman feels about her abortion, how many abortions have taken place, regretting or non-regretting or any of the other aspects of abortion. Compared to the preeminent question all of those issues are irrelevant.

Before making a ‘choice,’ see what ‘choice’ looks like

Abortion is not about the right to choose whether to become pregnant; that choice, often irresponsibly, was already made before the child was conceived. The choice the mother makes is whether to continue the “unwanted” pregnancy, whether to give birth to a live baby or to a dead one.

Wet, unwanted week: Thanks, BoE, for nothing

As I look out the window at yet another chilly, wet day, words cannot express my gratitude to the Fayette County school board for declaring a week-long vacation in February. After all, who wants to enjoy parks and pools in August when you can experience cabin fever in the middle of winter?

Draft Todd for school board; time to change

Recently I have read several letters and many, many blogs about the current school board. They fail to address to the enormous problem of out-of-county students, trailers at some schools while other schools have numbers of empty classrooms, no backbone, and on and on. By the way, those trailers are rented.

Pilot-basher used to kneeling position?

I’m surprised that the scab writer of the swill that bashes the union airline pilots of United, Delta, Northwest, FedEx, UPS, etc. (Free Speech, 15 Sept.) was able to muster such anger from his kneeling position. He’s probably used to speaking from there though.

Paying property taxes online: bring it on

Most citizens in Fayette County are very well educated and most have a computer or computer access. The idea of the Internet being used for the paying of taxes in our county is an idea that should not sound foreign in the 21st century.

Bush’s backing for Arab port deal forces GOP to ally with Democrats

George W Bush’s approval ratings have been hovering around 40 percent, give or take a few points. That’s roughly half of what they were just after Sept. 11, 2001.

Creationism creates conflict between 2 worldviews

The word “creationist” is an incendiary label in discussions about human origins. Creationists are charged with being anti-science, dogmatic fundamentalists and just a plain nuisance.

Civitans help Sandy Creek H.S.

As parents of Sandy Creek High School Jr. Civitan members, we would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the club members of the Fayette County and Line Creek Civitan Clubs. The two clubs have banded together to support our children’s endeavors in providing community service to those in need. Special thanks to Civitan Ray Marden, who served as the Jr. Civitan Club Builder.

Wiretapping puts president above law

Ralph Suchomel wrote an editorial in defense of the President circumventing the FISA court to eavesdrop. The defense was, Clinton did it too.

Daughter honored by community caring

I need to thank Fayette County and beyond for the way they have honored my daughter, Ashleigh Webster, and loved our family.

Not enough for teens to do? Give me a break

Here we go again. Leave it to a tragic event like a teen suicide to bring out the whiners that want to blame everything on the lack of “things to do for PTC youth.”

Many activities available to PTC teens apart from government functions

I read a letter last week about non-sports youth activities, with accusations that Mayor Logsdon isn’t going to respond to community demand to support them.

Wilkerson was Republican before it was cool

On Feb. 15, the Republican Party held its forum for the Republican candidates running for County Commission Post 1 between Emory Wilkerson, Robert Horgan and Malcolm Hughes. The debates were very informative, not only to the group of citizens who came to listen, but interestingly so, to the candidates themselves.

Dunn plaudits read like ‘self-serving resume’

Last week’s letter, supposedly written by William T. Nigro, was not written by anyone who knows Greg Dunn very well, or was it? When I read the line, “There is only one reason he is involved in local politics,” and continued by bragging about Dunn’s civic accomplishments, I first thought, “This guy doesn’t know Greg Dunn.”
