RE: Wilkerson was Republican before it was cool
Recently I was impressed by the letter from Richard Hobbs regarding the candidates for the special election on March 21 to fill the County Commission post left vacant by the passing of A.G. VanLandingham. This is an important election which has been given little attention.
When I heard the candidates, this is what I concluded to be their platforms.
Emory Wilkerson:
1. Longtime community activist. Church officer, Republican Party officer, school volunteer, appointed by Gov. Perdue to the Judicial Qualifications Committee.
2. Educated. Two degrees from Emory University and one law degree from Mercer University Law School.
3. Articulate. Good negotiating skills. Good manners.
4. Votes in elections every time and has always voted Republican.
5. Will represent the ENTIRE county. Is strongly against district voting.
6. Attended County Commission meetings long before he thought of running
Malcolm Hughes:
1. Wants to represent the north part of the county and is for district voting.
2. Votes Democrat.
Robert Horgan:
1. Wants to make a difference (everyone does).
2. Has voted in elections about half the time. Will he vote half the time on the commission?
3. Votes Democrat sometimes.
4. Not plugged into the community
5. Has not attended County Commission meetings.
Charles Rousseau:
1. Democrat.
2. Wants to represent the north end of the county.
Wendy Felton:
1. Democrat.
2. Not plugged into the community.
To me the choice is very clear. Emory Wilkerson is the kind of elected official I want representing me.
