Fayette, PTC police, emergency folks, thanks

With the talk lately on all the bad things about Peachtree City, I’m pleased to report on something quite good about our town. On the night of Wednesday, Dec. 13, a member of my family suffered from a potentially serious medical condition which caused me to activate the Fayette County 911 system.

Retraction request

Re: retraction request (Robert Alexander Reed, 107 Heritage Way, Peachtree City, Ga.).

Mr. Robert Alexander Reed was originally stopped by Peachtree City Police Department on Feb. 10, 2005, for possession of marijuana (he was not arrested at that time).

In Tyrone, we call the holiday ‘Christmas’

Re: “Tyrone Xmas parade: Idea not the brightest” by Emily Baldwin.

First off, in Tyrone we don’t refer to it as an “Xmas” parade; we call it a Christmas parade. You know this year Wal-Mart decided it was OK to call Christmas Christmas. You still had room at the top of your article (which was about one-third of a page) to spell Christmas. If someone as big as Wal-Mart can realize their error, maybe next year when you’re invited back you can call it a Christmas parade.

Make specific policies for school redistricting

The following was addressed to the Fayette County Board of Education and the school superintendent.

The recent redistricting to fill Bennett’s Mill Middle School is still fresh, and we as a county are looking to an even more contentious redistricting in 2007. I am a graduate of Fayette County schools (elementary through high school), and my husband and I chose to live here to raise our four children. I have a deep and abiding interest in our school system.

PTC Council making big decisions with little advance notice to public

Dec. 14 marked the second time in almost a month that the City Council of Peachtree City waited to issue a press release after the deadline of the local newspapers announcing a special called meeting on a very important issue.

The 3 a.m. phone call: Trying to make sense of Man versus Man tragedy

The phone rang at 3 o’clock in the morning, waking my wife and me from a restful holiday season slumber. Nothing good comes from that dreaded untimely phone call. The picking up of the receiver is always followed by either one cursing the thoughtless fool who has ruined your gentle sleep at the expense of a undeserving prank, or the cursing of your God for taking the life of a loved one.

Notwithstanding Parker’s insults, writer has seen executions, torture

It was interesting to read Mr. Parker’s unedited version of last week’s response to my last post.

In his letter he refers about me not having a dog in this fight. In another sentence he refers to me as follows: “Mr. Jansen (with his jumbled syntax and run-on sentences) tells us we’ve only lost 3,000 soldiers, so what’s the big deal?”

Some PTC drivers unsafe at any speed

I recently have had two experiences where I and my wife were almost struck by a golf cart due to inconsiderate or inattentive driving.

All else accountable, so why not judge?

I recently assisted in a trial in another county in which there were two defendants. It does not take a rocket scientist to know that a murder trial with two defendants are most likely going to take a week or two, especially since the two individuals charged with murder were tried together and not severed. Thus there would be a lot of evidence to be presented, witnesses to testify, etc., and it would most definitely be time-consuming any way you look at it.

PTC’s debt repayment shows city’s integrity

We had gone through years of hardships. The period leading up to the Revolutionary War had taken its toll. This was followed by the terrible years of war in which constant struggle and hardship had been the rule rather than the exception. Many of the brave men who signed the Declaration of Independence had lost everything including their very lives. These years had left a young nation and its people scarred and worn. This was followed by years of a failed government under the Articles of Confederation.

The good .. and the bad ... about Buddy Poppies

Thank you! Thank you! You were extra generous in your contributions to our Veterans Relief Fund on Veterans Day. We set a new single day record of $4,573.77, which was $270 more than our previous record set on the Saturday before Memorial Day 2006.

More about love . . .

I would like to respond to Trey Hoffman’s musing about love. I’m not necessarily disagreeing with what Hoffman had to say but offering a somewhat different perspective: What’s love got to do with it?

Former Sheriff’s Lt. Col. Bruce Jordan tells ‘my side of the story’

Up until now I have been ordered not to speak or tell my side of what happened that led to multiple demotions and a $35,000 pay cut for me. I don’t expect to change many minds but it’s important to my family that I tell my side of the story. While I was forbidden to speak, members of the Sheriff’s Department have spoken many times about it and the stories have become very slanted.

PTC parents ignored by Board of Education

Tyranny is defined as “absolute power arbitrarily or unjustly administered.” With the exception of Marion Keys, I find this befitting of the Fayette County Board of Education to the letter.

Don’t give kids BB guns

In the movie, “A Christmas Story,” Ralphie wants a Red Ryder BB gun from Santa. Even the Santa at the department store tells him that he could “shoot his eye out.” His teacher at school and his mother join in the mantra of the movie with “you’ll shoot your eye out.”

PTC Council should reinstate council oversight of city-owned venues

The unfortunate damage from the 1993–2001 Development Authority of Peachtree City mismanagement era was painfully ended last week. Although the infamous authority lost the war, the local homeowners and businesses will be the ones burdened with paying the almost $930,000 in reparations for the next 10 years.

Seasonal musings about love . . .

I want to take a break from all of the partisan bickering about the Iraq war and talk about something much more important: love.

Here’s how to really support troops

I recently watched “Braveheart” for about the 40th time. It has everything a cowboy could want: Two beautiful women, a cad, a hero, blood, guts, and history. What it does lack is historical validity.

PTC Christmas singing, tree lighting a great performance

We’d like to publicly thank Mayor Logsdon and the Dogwood Church for an outstanding performance at the Frederick Brown Amphitheater on Saturday, Dec 2.

Voters should decide Tennis Center payoff

Was the Development Authority able to legally manage a tennis center and amphitheater according to state law from 1993 to 2003?

Georgia EPD, federal EPA not living up to their middle name: Protection

Two of the most visible regulatory agencies in the post-9/11 era that have been charged with an even higher duty to protect its citizens from terrorist events are the Environmental “Protection” Division and the Environmental “Protection” Agency. There has been much talk and investigation into the fact that a terrorist organization would try to use facilities under the EPD’s/EPA’s care to implement a terrorist attack by poisoning our water or our air.

Why is it open season on pet dogs?

Two weeks ago we read in The Citizen the tragic story of Fender, a beloved family dog wearing a collar, that was shot by an irresponsible hunter who claimed Fender was running deer.

Now that the election is over . . .

Now that the histrionics regarding a change in congressional power are mostly over, I thought it time to reflect on what real effect the change will have on us.

So, only vets can speak about war?

My, my, my. I really hope that Timothy Parker doesn’t know what I look like. After his parting shot about “fighting word[s]” I fear Mr. Parker may put down his poison pen in favor of an upper cut. Who said liberals weren’t tough?

PTC must confront crime on cart paths

While reading your article, “Survey shows little interest for annexation” in the Nov. 17, 2006 edition of the The Peachtree Citizen, the following statements alarmed me; “70 percent said crime was a problem but not a major one, while 23 percent said it was not a problem and 7 percent said it was a major problem.”

Volunteers must fill gaps in PTC leadership

Giving back to the community through public service projects is one of the greatest legacies we can hand down to our children. The best way to teach a child accountability and civic pride is through practical application. Moral and ethical teaching without action only goes so far.

A hunter replies: Fender ran deer, had to be shot

I would like to send my condolences to Justin Edwards on the loss of Fender his dog.

Next I would like to address the letter from his parents.

Help military’s children have a good Christmas

Embracing Military Families is beginning its annual Christmas fund drive. Contributions of checks, toys and bicycles provide much-needed Christmas cheer to the children of our service men and women.

A political bedtime story starring Mr. Ihaveaprogram, Mr. Jobforlife, etc.

Once upon a time, Mr. Ihaveaprogram was running for office in his local district. He was trying to figure out how to get people to vote for him when he stumbled across Mr. Poordecisions, who claimed he was down on his luck due to no fault of his own.

Appalled by School Board’s ‘ignorance or incompetence,’ a candidate is born

From what I can tell the situation is as simple as this: the Board of Education built a middle school that we do not need, in a location where it is not needed, and they are trying to fill it up to justify the irresponsible decisions that were made to build it in the first place.
