Where are ’copters to halt neighbors’ party?

This is Tuesday, and I have just finished teaching piano to my last student. We have concluded our lesson at 7 p.m. I am waving goodbye to my student and her parents and have noticed that just across the street my neighbor has a party going on — five cars parked on the street outside their home. I’ve just had one or two cars this week for piano instruction.

Comments about school not fact-based

Freedoms of speech and of press are the very cornerstones of our way of life. But with these freedoms come some serious responsibility.

Is Newt the one to consider for #1?

I followed Cal Thomas’ advice (see “Who can fix our broken politics? How about Newt?”) and watched the entire discussion on www.americansolutions.com.

Debate needed about Bush-Cheney push to outsource government

Much has been, and will continue to be, written about the “new direction” in Iraq, the “surge” in the commitment of 21,500 additional combat troops into Baghdad and Anbar Province.

There was a time when we respected our country

It’s almost impossible to believe these days, but there was a time when Americans were strong and loyal. We respected our President and government and cared for the rights, safety and welfare of people in other countries. We respected God and attended church to worship our creator, and we respected each other.

TDK: 2 or 4 lanes, trafficwill still be horrendous

I was at a dinner party Saturday in Lawrenceville. Most of the 30 people in attendance were long-time residents of Gwinnett County.

Thanks to honest folks

This is to thank the person (angel) that found and turned in my wallet with everything intact Feb. 19. It was not until I returned home after picking up my car from Kauffman Tire on Crosstown Road in Peachtree City that my wife asked me if I had my wallet. To my surprise I did not have it and almost went into shock.

Politicians seem bent on giving away birthright

As an American citizen I feel I am being robbed of my birthright. This past year I have been listening and following the news of our politicians working on devising ways to grant amnesty to illegal aliens, provide illegal aliens with health and medical coverage, credit cards, etc.

Help stop the overdevelopment of Jekyll Island

The Jekyll Island Authority (JIA) and its state-appointed Board of Directors, acting in concert with a yet-to-be-named private sector partner, will soon be drafting plans for the refurbishment and further development of Jekyll Island which will have major consequences for the island’s future.

Legislature to give bad drivers Internet pass?

I am a former assistant district attorney for the state of Georgia. I am concerned about House Bill 416 (Section 3A). HB 416 is proposing a law that will allow individuals with a poor driving record to take an online course to satisfy requirements to have their driver’s license reinstated.

We should support President’s Iraq plan

President Bush has a clear plan for victory in Iraq that begins with training Iraqi forces so they can defend their country and fight the terrorists. We are making tremendous progress towards this objective.

What I actually said about solving Iraq problem

In his recent letter, “Failure to pursue victory in Iraq will result in American vulnerability,” (The Citizen, Feb. 20), I am afraid that Mr. Hoffman has distorted and twisted my positions.

Middle school decision displays BoE’s ‘scalpel’

The school board blames the cost of allowing rising eighth graders to stay at their current schools as justification for sending them to Bennett’s Mill to finish their last year.

You say ‘detention,’ I say ‘retention’ . . .

Re today’s front page article about the BoE selling or keeping 33 acres: ”If the property were sold, the school system would have to build new detention ponds, since the current ones....”

Parents, scrutinize what Merck is really selling

Ms. Arrowsmith, do you own some Merck stock, or do you just sheepishly go along with whatever a huge, multinational corporation tells you to do?

Hunter tells his side of dog’s death

Yes, it is I, the so-called irresponsible, trigger-happy hunter that shot Fender [the pet dog]. I have kept out of this emotionally charged discussion since the incident. I have been attacked repeatedly by members of the community that have been driven by emotion and a one-sided story. Here is my side.

Failure to pursue victory in Iraq will result in American vulnerability

So, it seems my interlocutors are united on many fronts. They believe I am a mindless follower of Republican talking points. They believe I am labeling all critics of the Iraq war unpatriotic. They believe I am bloodthirsty, love war, don’t care about civilian deaths, am ignorant of history, don’t understand the current situation in the Middle East, slavishly slurp up anything President Bush says, act in bad faith, disregard facts, etc.

Thanks for helping military families

To the most generous citizens of Fayette County: First of all, please forgive the tardiness of this letter. A combination of circumstances has prevented me from writing sooner.

Copters coming for me?

This is Thursday, and I am teaching piano in my home in Peachtree City to your children and grandchildren. I hear the Peachtree City police helicopter hovering above my neighborhood for a while.

Tyrone leaders’ vision blurred on growth

It seems that the citizens of Tyrone must prepare to oppose another high-density development. The latest proposed development includes approximately 54 acres, on two tracts running from Senoia Road to Tyrone-Palmetto Road.

PTC just didn’t want to deal with ‘Mule’ idea

The article on the Kawasaki Mule was correctly reported until the last paragraph, which stated that I (Ted Taylor) admitted that the registration of the vehicle was done after I was told it was not allowed. That fact is absolutely incorrect.

How can any parent not want their daughters protected against cancer?

I must admit, I was filled with dismay and confusion upon reading a letter from reader Ron Black concerning the new vaccine, Gardasil. Apparently he is quite upset that the government is leaning toward requiring this vaccine for our 11-year-old girls to enter school. He states that he feels that a “law of this type could be used as a precedent in our legal system to impose many other laws on our society, the magnitude of which only the greed of man can conceive.” Huh?

Deputies ready to help with query, ‘Is my car’s window tint too dark?’

In June 2005 I wrote a letter to the editor concerning window tint violations. The article concerned the newly re-instated Georgia window tint law. As a captain with the Traffic Enforcement Division of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, one of the most frequently asked questions I hear is, “Are my car windows too dark?”

Better question on Iraq: What will happen if we don’t withdraw soon?

Re: Mr. Hoffman’s questions, published in the Feb. 7 edition of The Citizen.

I read with interest yours and Tim Parker’s letters to the editor, and enjoy the bantering between you. But this time I have so many concerns on so many different levels with your letter, I had to write as well.

What will happen? Many things, not all bad

In a recent letter, “What happens in Iraq if we pull out,” (The Citizen, Feb. 6), Trey Hoffman poses the question: If we withdraw our troops now from Iraq, what will happen to the Kurds, Sunnis in Shi’ite areas, Shi’ites in Sunni areas and the helpless, innocent women and children?

Who benefits most by leaving Iraq? U.S. does

Had Mr. Hoffman kept his tome in the form of an interrogative it would be easier to answer his questions. But as his form, like his reasoning, leaps from inane question to uninformed conjecture, I’ll do what I can to answer what I think he was asking, and dispute his poorly researched notions.

Pfeifer: Don’t annex unless it’s low density

I believe that I should express my opinion of the potential annexation, by Peachtree City, of the so-called “West Village.”

TDK Extension will be traffic disaster for PTC

Mayor Harold Logsdon is demanding two lanes instead of four for the TDK Extension. This is remarkable because when the mayor voted in December to accept the right-of-way as the developers wanted, the mayor told us “that it was better to have the land under city control so the city can ultimately decide whether to build the road or not” (Citizen, Dec. 14, 2006). Another smokescreen — he was always going [to be] building the road.

Change for the better in schools starts with us

My communication is in response to a disturbing letter printed on 12/27/2006, challenging minority families in Fayette County to stand up and demand changes at Sandy Creek/Flat Rock/Burch schools, before they mimic the schools in Clayton County.
