Bon Voyage

About halfway through the blockbuster movie The Perfect Storm, I broke out in a cold sweat that sent “shivers up me timbers.” Instinctively my heart and stomach bonded with the screen characters being helplessly thrashed by the unforgiving sea. In effect, each waterlogged scene stirred up a flashback to my own terror-filled memories of sailing Lake Erie.

I have always been a “word” person—take’em apart, put ‘em back together, study and learn. Games with words have always held a peculiar fascination for me. And I think anyone in my family would agree that I am the family Scrabble champ. So, when I headed for graduate school back in the ‘70s, I guess it was no surprise that I quickly became an English major. I was in heaven...especially when I took advanced grammar, aka “linguistics.” (Take ‘em apart, put ‘em back together.) My big term paper was on dialects and slang and was entitled, “The Idiom and the Oddity...Variations in American Speech.” Pretty cute, huh? (I got an A.)

Counting the seconds...
By BILLY MURPHY
Laugh Lines

I keep hearing people talk about Al Gore selecting a vice-president, but I thought we already had that in Bill Clinton. I think Gore should select an anti-vice president. Anyway, the whole concept of the vice-president is pretty stupid to me. Like the SUV, the vice-presidency is bourgeois and needs to be gone. There are plenty of better alternatives.
